Hi
I hear about these TVs in the US that are 120hz capable but if i buy a 100hz PAL TV can it actually display at 120hz if the source is blu ray? I would think that if you set the blu ray to 24fps, in 120hz mode it would work out as 120 / 24 = 5 but 100/24 = 4.16666 Can anyone explain to me how this works? |

I also want to know more about the 100Hz or 120Hz, with regards to Blu-ray NTSC and PAL don't come into play, right?
So if it is a TV broadcast or DVD at 60 or 50Hz, not a real issue for me. Only wondering about refresh rate for Blu-ray. I am in Taiwan, they sell KDL-52W4000 (UK model number) with Motionflow 100Hz. Here we are NTSC, but not an issue with Blu-ray, right? Stuff I have heard, but not confirmed: 100Hz spec is really 96, can divide by 24? Does Sony use a 100 because it sounds nicer? Are the numbers in reality 100hz and 120Hz for the same TV, but the specs are refering to PAL and NTSC settings for DVD not Blu-ray? Loved to know the answers for the future, I think I am going to get a projector instead. Wait...does this stuff affect projectors too? Last edited by Travis; 03-17-2009 at 02:50 PM. |

The '100Hz' European HDTV sets can operate at both 100Hz and 120Hz (and should accept 50i/p, 60i/p signals - and sometimes 24p too - though obviously check specifications before buying any model). The '120Hz' USA sets can usually only only operate at 120Hz. ie. with a lot of those sets, if you fed them a 50Hz signal they wouldn't accept it. I think it's that the sets intended by the European & USA market are built by the same companies, and the USA must disable the 50Hz capability. Kjack in the insider's thread would know the most about these things. Quote:

But he said the TV's were the same, sound better to the consumers to call it 100hz instead of 96hz. Though I can't say for sure |

I just know what one of the hi end shop told me, the Samsung LCD would do proper 4:4 pull down at 96hz but it was better marketing to say it was 100hz. This guy was at a high end shop that mostly sold speakers and no TVs other then some projectors. Singapore was PAL/50hz country though I think they BD content here is 24fps (I order everything from the amazon in the US). If I go to a normal electronics store, my questions go over their heads. They do not understand 5:5 or 4:4 pull down or 24 fps, 3:2 pull down etc. So I gave up trying to ask them as every answer just came back... yes., it supports 24 fps. So I can not confirm, but i believe that if the manufacturer makes a TV that does proper 5:5 pull down at 120hz in the US, that their 100hz TV in other markets probably does proper 4:4 pull down at 96hz. |
