Default Ps3 coming,Need some advise

Yes
Believe it or not iam grabbing a ps3,With all the problems that i have been hearing about Samsung players i Decided it would be a smart idea to have a back up (Just in case)
This is what i need help with, Iam going to pull it with a HDMI cable into the reciever

1)my reciever decodes, what in setup of the ps3 do i need to change
2)where do i go to download firmware
3)will i get DTSHD,Dolby True and how about PCM 5.1 uncompressed
4)Should i buy a PS3 remote
5)Iam grabbing a 40gig,Why would i need a 80gig,or do i need it
6) If there is anything that iam missing that i should know about the PS3,Please share

Any suggestions or facts about the PS3 will be helpful,Your humble student

OZZMAN
1) settings>sound settings>audio output settings(HDMI)>(select your formats)

2) settings>system update (its the first option)

4) YES

5) the 40 gb is silent, if you are using it just as a bluray player, it is the ideal choice. If you decide later you want to put downloaded movies on your ps3, or put some dvd rips on there, or some HDdvd rips, you can get a 320gb hard drive for about $79 and pop it in, and have all the room in the world.

When updating do you just have to be on the net or is there a site you have to go too

all you need is to either have a wireless internet connection, or to have an actual ethernet wire going directly into the ps3. all you have to do is select 'system update', and the ps3 does the rest

(unlike stand-alone players) the ps3 does the updating for you. and when a new update comes out, and notifies you of it automatically

3) Yes, you will get all of the HD audio formats. The PS3 decodes internally and passes the audio along via linear PCM (be sure to select linear instead of bitstream in the PS3's audio settings).

4) Yes, the gamepad is a clunky controller for movie watching and you will probably be happier with the separate bluetooth remote.

You can also go to the PSN network and down load the Update to a usb or flash device.

Thank you i will grabb the remote
With my Samsung 1400 it also decodes internally ,But because my reciever decodes internally i set the blu-ray player to bitstreem.
Can i just do the same with the PS3 and set to bitstreem.
Letting the reciever decode instead of the Ps3

No, to get lossless audio when using the PS3, you have to let it decode it.

Also, if you have the PS3 connected to the network, it'll tell you when there are firmware updates available.

Your receiver will display multichannel PCM...

and press 'select' on the PS3 game remote or 'display' on the PS3 BD remote. It will show you what audio format is being played.

and I would highly recommend the BD remote for movie watching.

First off congrats on the PS3, awesome dicision. As far as your ordeals

1. Yes get the remote you'll be happy with it I am
2. Yes your receiver will not display the DTS master or anything like that, but don't worry you'll be hearing it still.
3. You'll be happy with your PS3 I wish I would have goten mine sooner then what I did.

So my reciever is showing PCM.
Lets say i chose DTS master 5.1 on the movie setup,Are you guys ready.

Can i still use all my DSP modes with my Yamaha and set it up in my reciever to get lets say Spectacular`MODE and receive Fake 7.1.Like i do with my 1400 even with the reciever showing PCM

(i hope someone understands what iam trying to say ) Or am i stuck with just what the PS3 is decoding(Not knowing is not know )

Don`t worry boys iam coming down to the last of my questions

That depends on your receiver, not on the PS3 or other BD players. IF the receiver allows DSP mode via HDMI, then you are clear. IF not, you'll get the pure 5.1/7.1 mix.

I'll give you an example. My son burned a CD in mp3 format on the reciever it said PCM.
i could not use the dsp modes.Iam just guess it was just the format.
I think I'll be fine with DSP modes .But it would be nice if someone with a yamaha receiver could confirm this and give me peace of mind.

I want to personally thank everyone that has shared on this thread it means a lot to me
THANKYOU
