Anyone else disappointed by the video quality on this new blu-ray?
doesn't look any better than my upconverted dvds. Still a lot of grain. images are soft. I can still see some pixelization on some of the cgi scenes, like the overhead view of the palace on shindig, the pixelization of the trees is very noticable. I don't think they did a damn thing with the masters for this release; and that pisses me off. Seems to just be a repackaging of the original dvd versions with dts-ma audio.

sigh, actually they do look a tad better but not much. The main reason was that all the FX and action shots were done in SD to begin with. Some of the long shots and character close ups look great because they were on 35mm film but the low low budget of this film severely hampered video presentation of this series. However the lossless audio on this puppy made me cream myself!!!

True, the quality is not that much better.

I got my copy today and the piece that holds disc 2 is broken off as well!

Anyone know where to get 3 disc replacement cases like these?

After seeing all of the comments from those who bought it, I am starting to wonder if I should update this? I might just keep my old DVD set.

I agree. This is sad news indeed. Firefly deserves so much more...

This is what Firefly looks like, aside from potentially redoing some FX shots, this is about as good as it's going to get. Firefly was shot on film, but it was also shot on a TV schedule. When people ask "why don't Buffy and Angel get the upgrade" this is one of the reasons why, because FF actually looks better than Angel ever has.

Post production in 2003, especially on Fox was aimed at the 480p broadcast (remember they were still "enhanced widescreen" at the time) first and foremost.

It's a huge upgrade over the DVD, you just have to look beyond the superficial. A/Bing them: compression artifacts- gone, blurryness-gone, color depth, noticeably higher, blacks-noticeably deeper. The whole thing is just tighter. The FX shots were professionally upconverted as well, so they look better than any on the fly scaler is going to manage.

Serenity on HD DVD was gorgeous. On Blu it should be even better.

Well, considering Buffy and Angel were both filmed with the special effects shots being mastered in SD, I guess we sort of have an idea of how the series may look if they ever come to Blu Ray. Buffy and Angel would probably look even more disappointing than Firefly because many of the special effects shots in Buffy/Angel are much of the fight scenes which are prevalent in many of the episodes.

And even if those fight sequences do look HD, it will only make the horrible stunt double cuts all the more evident.

I'm still going to get it. I saw it for a really good deal at Wal-Mart, but I'm holding off on getting it because I'm hoping I can get it for Xmas, and then wait a few days for SERENITY to come out on Blu-Ray on the 30th and do a marathon viewing of the two of them.

I've had my copy of Firefly for a few days now and have watched Serenity 1 & 2, Out of gas, and Objects in space.

The video is a bit of a mixed bag, the CGI shots are soft and don't look any better then the DVD up converted. The show it's self was shot in 35mm and looks very good, better then the DVD up converted. The video does not look as good on Blu as were use to seeing with some of the recent reference video releases but still this is a TV show and IMO the video is very good.

The audio is where Firefly on Blu really shines. The shows are in DTS-MA and sound far better then the previous DVD release, I was surprised how much more of a work out my sub was getting from the standard DVDs.

All and all I would say if your a Firefly fan the double dip is worth it, the improvements are not leaps and bounds better then the DVD release but This is the best I have ever seen this show look and sound and probably as good as it gets.

ALL Sfx shot are done in 720x480, so you'll get a Upconverted DVD look but without EE and Macroblocking (witch a lot of tv series have on dvd). The rest look just fine. The show is very dark. It's not Pixar..

For what it's worth, you made me feel better about purchasing the complete series.

Shame about the filming SE in SD. I've seen Firefly twice and rate it very highly...
