For 150$ your best bet is ebay, pawn shops, etc... You will not find even a decent stereo receiver for that price.

The BEST low-level one I can suggest to you to start out with would be a Sony STR-DG720. They are $150, I think, at Best Buy on Black Friday. $300 normally. With a PS3 using linear PCM, you should get all the audio codecs. But it doesnt do any decoding in itself. Decent entry-level receiver, though. Pairs well with many beginning speakers like Boston Acoustics entry line, Polk RM, etc.

It is really hard to get a "good" reciever for 150. If you could get up to 399 then you might get something that would be considered good.

That's the problem I'm facing.... It's going to take me a few years to get a good surround system together with my budget.

Honestly, you'd be better to get a great 2 channel stereo set up rather than a cruddy 5.1 ESPECIALLY for music!
