Default Good Reciever and Speakers from BestBuy

I'm looking into getting a reciever and a 7.1 speaker setup from BB for under $1k total. What would be a good setup comparable to the Onyo HT-SP908 7.1 Home Theater System?

Sorry... typed 905 instead of 908...

Regardless of where you buy it, a sub-$1K 7.1 setup won't be very good. Certainly not in the same league as the Onkyo 905!

Any reason why other stores aren't in consideration?

If this is for a small apartment or the bedroom , I would wait for the Panasonic SC-BT100 blu ray HTiB. Comes with all the trimming and its going to be under a grand.

Why does the size of the room matter???? We're not talking potential power, better receivers have better sound quality due to cleaner power etc....

I personally don't care for Onkyo anyways, but I know many do because they can be had on the cheap....

I know we all don't have money to be throwing away on HT shtuff. I recommend you find a friend/family member who works at Best Buy and get their discount. They get 40% off on most speakers/amplifiers. Just be aware that it must be paid cash or on their Best Buy credit card. I bought the Klipsch Speaks (series 3). I know that you probably want your set up right away but I would suggest that you invest that money on speakers alone and if you have to wait a bit longer for your Amplifier then do it. There is nothing worst than spending (a lot) of money on something to then realize that you could have had something better. You can get the $1000 yahama 7.1 receiver for $600 with the employee discount.

Either way, congrats in advance for your new surround sound system

It takes more power (and better equipment) to fill a large room with clean output. So if this setup is for a large living room connected to a kitchen, then a HTiB won't do. If it is a small appartment, then a HTiB may suffice although I wouldn't go that route. The room size and the acoustics of that room are extremely important in setup and design.

Agreed. Persoanlly, I wouldn't touch one of those HTiB with someone else's barge pole. I'd rather go without for a bit longer while I saved up for something better.

I'm not looking for a HTiB from BB... just suggestions for what Reciever and speaker set up to go with. On here everyone looks for a "well how much do you have to spend"... so a gave a quick $1k... but it is always flexable... especially with the discount!

If he's willing to risk his job to let you use his discount, you should use the Klipsch accommodations instead. You can get a lot more discount through the accommodations (for example the RF82s are like 120 bucks a piece, normally 500) and you'll get a lot better system. Then you just need the receiver. You could also just start with a 5.1 system to get something better and then add the other two speakers down the road. That would be, IMO, a much wiser investment.

The Pioneer Elite VSX-91TXH is like 500 bucks after the BBY discount as well . . . half off.

Consider the Sony 5400ES AV receiver with maybe Infinity TSS-1200 or TSS-4000 speaker package. Not sure if Best Buy's Magnolia stores would sell that or not?
