Default TrueHD sounds quiet...

is it me or when i watch movies with truehd like Iron Man or Iny 4, the track seems quieter than DTS HD MA. What causes this? is it just recorded at a lower volume?

It could be dialnorm or you probly have DRC turned on, turn it off.

And everybody wonders why people dont like TrueHD

TrueHD tracks are typically recorded at lower volume than DTS, which tend to run "hot." SirTerrence, a sound insider here, if I remember correctly said that TrueHD are typically recorded at reference levels, while DTS is slightly higher. Just turn it up. It's all the same. 3 or 4 db should do it.

some truehd tracks sounds weaker than DTS-MA and PCM coz some studios like warner compresses it to 16bit compared to the studio master 24bit. But yeah, Indy 4's truehd soundtrack is really is weak.

This is the correct answer, but I'd say 6-7db with Paramount titles.

Thats interesting...

And a timely post.

I just got done watching Iron Man and was a tad disappointed w/ the soundtrack. It just seems like there needed to be more punch to it. Not that I know a whole lot about audio or anything...
Too many times I equate a low mastered soundtrack with it being sucky. I shouldnt do that.

I watched The Incredible Hulk last night and thought it kicked butt (in terms of AQ)

USA make sure you have dynamic range control set to OFF in your player or receiver setup

Sounds like you have DRC turned on or another issue then, because Iron Man is one of the better sounding BRs.

Man how I wish I agreed with that since I love the movie... and I know I am still in the minority but Iron Man is something I just have a serious problem with and the lack of ... Ooomf? can't think of another word right now.
and yes I have turned Drc off... might have improved a little but still dont think of it as one of the best...

Okay.. was just checking out the settings on both the 550 and the reciever.
I see that the Sony has a DRC setting...but there is no 'off' on it..unless I am missing it. You can set it to 'auto'..'standard'..and 2 other ones which escape me. But there is no 'off' that I can see.

As far as the reciever...I dont see a 'night mode' on it..again...unless I am blind..and that could be the case.

Any thoughts?

I shouldnt say Iron Man sounded bad...but like the last poster said..lacks oomph.

V for Vendetta lacks Oooomph as well. Sadly the flick has many opportunities to show off some ooomph, but does not.

Weird...
In the manual for the STR-DA2100ES (p.42 us version), the 3 options are "STD", "MAX" or "OFF". "OFF" being the proper choice in that case...

If there is not "off" then the proper option should be something like "FULL" (for full dynamic range) or "WIDE" (for wide dynamic range).

It's the mix. Both this and Indiana Jones have been noted to have mixes that are a little flat. It doesn't have anything to do with the CODEC used.
