I am looking to do my first out of country trip over the summer, my girlfriend and I are thinking about Melbourne, australia. Has anyone been? If so how did you like it, and we are thinking of staying in hostels opposed to hotels to save money...has anyone stayed in hostels? how are they compared to hotels?
Any information would be nice! PS - Please no jokes about the terrible movie HOSTEL ![]() |

Thats the only place that Chelsea (my g/f) and I could agree on. I have always wanted to go to australia anyways for the wild life and different cultures, our budget for flight+rooming is around the 1,500 - 2K range.

To be honest with that kind of budget your options are very limited for that kind of travel. That $1500 would be the plane tickets alone.
My last vacation the tickets for my wife and I were $1800+ after taxes and we flew coach. LAX to OGG(Kahului, Maui) Goto Tripadvisor and ask around there. Those people know everything. |

Book the flights then check VRBO for a rental property. That way you will have a kitchen and can save money. |

How long of a trip are you planning? You can get to Ireland (for example) in 8 hours or so from NYC...... I think it'd take about 15 or 16 hours (with at least one stop since you can't go non-stop anyways) to go to Melbourne.... PLUS, because of the time-zones etc... you'd probably arrive TWO DAYS after you left..... crazy.... ANYWAYS..... My favorite international trip (so far) has been Beunos Aires, and it's only a 10 hour flight from Miami....
Either way, I don't think Australia is "do-able" with your budget.... you're looking at $1,500 PER TICKET I'm guessing...... Good luck! |

As for Crim's trip: In US summer/fall, you can get a ticket from LAX or SFO to New Zealand for under a $1k. It's winter down that way, but temperatures never get too cold. With this much notice you should be able to get out to California relatively cheaply. It was a few hundred bucks round trip from Auckland to Sydney (IIRC) so $1800 sounds a bit high. Might not be though. When I studied abroad in College, we stayed in Hostels quite a bit (Czech Republic, Austria and Germany) or even at private residences where homes were rented out. One of my room mates left the door unlocked and we had some stuff stolen. Other than that, no issues, and that problem was clearly a fault on our end. |

I have stayed at all kinds. Squadbay type joints with 40 or 50 people in one room on bunkbeds... Dont fall asleep with anything that can be ganked, cause it will. I once stayed in a hostel in stirling in Scotland where I got a hotel type room. Then there is a more common few people to a small room...maybe 4 or 6 people sharing a room. I once got sick in Amsterdam with a high fever and was staying in a hostel. On the one hand, a good number of people brought me stuff like food and goodies and water throughout the day. On the other hand the lights were always on, the windows were always open and it was louder than hell... If you can deal with people and dont have much to get ripped off or are careful about your kit, hostels are a good way to go. If not they will ruin your trip. |

I have never been to Melbourne but Australia is a nice place.
But if this is your first trip outside the US then I think a better bet would be UK or Ireland from the ones you mentioned. Australia is extremely far and it is many hours (must be something like 20h+) in the plane and an expensive ticket. Make the first trip the simplest and then go from there. |

I say an all inclusive resort somewhere in Cabo or Cancun. Those places are great. I'm a sucker for the tropics though.
Here's my dream vacation - Aitutaki I'm doing Wine Country in April for a friends wedding and New York in July. If I can fit it in I'm going to Maui again. I love it there. Been there for the past two summers. Hawaii is really affordable if you plan it right. |
