Default HD-DVR vs Blu-ray

I'm curious... is Blu-ray just an HD version of a DVD? Because currently, I can watch HD movies with Comcast On-Demand, thru my HD-DVR and I'm wondering if I buy a Blu-ray player and Blu-ray discs, am I getting the same picture I already see on my HDTV?

Same goes for HD prime time TV shows. Is a Blu-ray dvd going to give me better quality than HD prime time?

Just curious... I'm a Blu-ray virgin and looking to upgrade for movies, but if I'm already seeing the best quality on my HDTV and HD-DVR, then what is so special about Blu-ray? I know my DVD's are not HD, but once again... am I already seeing a Blu-ray image compared to regular HDTV?

Yes Blu-Ray is a better picture.

Most shows and movies on cable in HD are 1080i where as BR is 1080p. Along with a better picture you get better sound. You get HD 5.1/7.1 sound from a BR disc where as with On-Demand sometimes you get 2.0. Some of the movies on cable even tho they say HD they are really just a blown up SD picture and they can be distorted.

To me watching a movie in HD on cable compared to a BD is night and day difference. BD is always more clear and colorful.

Also, if you have surround sound that is HDMI or lossless capable, you will seriously reap the benefits of going blu-ray. Watching a movie on hd-dvr is cool, but blu-ray just blows it out of the water. It's an experience.

Great... that's what I needed to know. Now on to the Blu-ray player thread to make sure I get the best buy for my money.

... besides, why not try it out... you can always return it.

cable and sat images are also compressed, which is why you get pixelation / macro blocking with some hd content on cable and sat!

everything on blu is uncompressed

and i figured i'd just throw this in, it's not blu-ray dvd, it's just blu-ray.

And yes, blu ray BLOWS AWAY HD dvr.

As an example i had a couple of friends over and we were watching spiderman 1 in HD on tnt i think it was. My one friend said "wow man that blu ray is amazing!" and i said "HA! Let me put in a blu ray and you'll see how it's night and day." I than popped in Iron man and he was amazed at the difference.

You wont be dissapointed.
