Default speaker holders

On my two tower speakers and the stands for the bookshelf speakers I got, there are four spikes per speaker/stand. These came with little circle things that you put them into, but there such a pain in the ass to get in place and when you try to get the last one in the other always comes out. Are these things even necessary? Can't I just put the speakers/stands flat on the floor?

Spikes help stabilize the speakers, isolating them from vibrations, and that in turn helps present clearer imaging.

It might be a pain, but I'd keep the spikes in place as intended.

I use spikes on my speakers as well, but I don't use any cones. They sit directly on my hardwood floor and do their job admirably. You may want to try listening for a few weeks without them, get to know the delivery of sound from your speakers and then make a switch by using the cones you are having so much trouble with. You may find that the cones won't even be needed, but then you may find that you do. Experiment!

You can put the speakers directly on the floor, but spikes or something else under the speakers may be very worthwhile to improve the performance.
