Default Why is my heater blowing cold air?

Last night my AC/heater unit started blowing cold air when the heat was supposed to be on, which actually droped the temp in the house. I don't think the motor is running when the heat is on, so I think all the rain we have gotten recently has shorted the motor. I just had the motor replaced 6 months ago. Why would a new motor do this?

Huh? If it's blowing the motor should be turning. The furnace lights a pilot then the blower kicks on. Sometimes the flame will go out but the blower will stay on, blowing cold air.

There is a flame sensor associated with the furnace. If you remove and clean it with some sandpaper, it may fix everything. It'll be a metal rod looking thing right near the front but pointing into where the flame would be.

Do you have gas heat? Or do you have a heat pump?

Is it a Gas or Electric system? Sounds like a heat pump of course but more info is needed.

I think it is electric, not gas? I'm not home so I can't pull the grills off the unit to look. It is a Lennox, if that helps.

Condenser sounds like its not kicking in or your heating strips inside (if equipped) are not coming on.

After doing some research, I think you are right about the heat strips. also, someone at work said it might be low on refrigerant.

Could be a bad reversing valve coil. Is the heat pump iced up? Could be a defrost issue. Lots of possibilities.

Thats it. With the cold weather and rain, the coils iced up and tripped the breaker. Once the breaker was flipped, it fixed itself.

Next question, how to properly clean the coils?

Soap and water. Nothing that will corrode the coils. Make sure you don't bend the fins either.

Just hose the frozen coils down with water to remove all of the ice. If the freezing rain continues, just keep an eye on them and de-ice when needed again. I had this happen to a heat-pump we had years ago in our first Richmond home. I hate heat pumps. They suck when the temperature drops below ~25 degrees, or so.

is it constantly sending cold air or not? what can happen is that if it is cold enough the fan in the furnace can start circulating the air before the heat starts, so it is circulating the cold air (which feels cooler) like others have also said that sometimes the heat pump can need to go in reverse for a few minutes.

Ours at work would attempt to cool the room to the requested heat level that generally did not work.

Through in our case it was always the pilot light going out...
