I was wondering when I get my new Hd audio reciver with HDMI ports,
When I run a Hdmi Cable from the 360 to the reciver, Can i finally get rid of the opitical cable and Bukly connector for it? I know HDMI handels Digital Audio and picture in one But I was wondering if the 360 supports this kind of setup and continue to give me DD. Or would I still need the Optical cable |

Yes, you are still going to need the optical cable. Last xmas when I was given an elite system, I went thru the pains of trying to figure out why my audio wasn't always working. I also had upgraded my receiver and had plenty of HDMI ports. As both parts were new, I went thru a list of all the situations, ie, bad HDMI cable, bad Xbox, bad input on the receiver...etc. Turns out, if you read the instruction manual, it specifically says that HDMI is for video and audio only out of your TV and to get the sound to your sound system, to use the optical cable. Mind you, if you are okay manually going into your 360 every time you start it to the sound settings and flicking off and the back on the Dolby Digital or whatever setting is the right one each time, you will get sound via the HDMI but, this is far from ideal. Spent a great deal of time on the phone with microsoft and sony before I found this in the book. Also, replaced my HDMI cable, have an instore contract on my 360 so switched that out as well...so unless some update during the past year changed this, you have to use the optical cable.
edit: apparently, had I read all of the comments, someone above says it works...so maybe somethings changed. I haven't tried rewiring the system but, you can download the manual from the xbox 360 website and check if you don't have one laying around. http://support.xbox.com/support/en/u...onManuals.aspx For the elite system, the HDMI hook up is on page 6 and 7. Nbxfan...maybe it did change? My original 360 (pro) was bought back in March of 07, and HDMI was no problem. Receiver recognizes it as DD5.1 and I never changed any setting in the 360 except the initial setup. I get sound out of all 5 channels, depending on the game.
Can't imagine the elites are much different, but if it was an older one than maybe. I'd venture to guess that the new 360's have no issue at all with the sound. camper |
