Upgrade: Elite or PS3?

For those people that already have a 360 and are considering an Elite as well - which would be your best "upgrade" path?

With the 360 Elite "upgrade" you get

120GB hard drive
HDMI 1.2a.

With the PS3 "upgrade" you get

60GB hard drive
Blu-ray
HDMI 1.3
Built-in Wireless Ethernet
Support for Bluetooth devices including non-Sony ones.
Compact Flash, SD Card, Memory Stick slots.
PS3 exclusive games
On-line multi-player for those games
Linux...
..and you can still keep your 360 to play current and future 360 games as well. So nothing lost in that regard.

No brainer. PS3. HDMI isn't critical, and with 1.3 capable recievers/seperates coming soon, it loses even more luster.

My only gripe is M$ charging of $180 for the bigger HDD. Highway robbery IMO.

If your 360 is doing everything you want it to do and there's no problems...then clearly the PS3 gives you an appreciable upgrade and it opens the door for you to all the exclusives that it's going to have and...oh yeah...you can get into Blu-Ray without really feeling any pain.

Not to mention that the PS3 HDD is user upgradeable, if for some reason you want more storage space...

Is PS3 hdd user officially user upgradeable? I'd be interested to get that and install 1tb HDD in it for sure.

Yes, it is user upgradeable. But since it is a 2.5 inch hard drive, it can only hold up to 200GB. I think Sony made a mistake by not using 3.5 inch hard drives. The only reason I can see that they didn't is to prevent ripping Blu-rays to the HDD.

It's so official, there are instructions on how to remove and replace the HDD in the PS3's manual.

I'll warn you. For the next five years, if you ask anyone on this forum to choose between the PS3 and a non-Sony Blu-ray player, over 90% of the responses will be for the PS3. Sorry, I'm not to knocking the PS3, because it's an awesome player, but it has gone into my bedroom. The new Samsung BD-P1200 is now the Blu-ray player for my home theater, because it's a slightly superior player, and because I prefer using a regular remote control as opposed to a game controller for movies. I chose not to invest extra in the PS3 remote.

When it comes to TV's too, all I ever hear is SONY, SONY, SONY! I respect the hell out of Sony, but I don't worship the company. Panasonic makes great plasmas, Samsung makes great LCD's & DLP's, and Sharp also makes great LCD's, but when you talk about the best high-end TV's on this forum, there is definitely a Sony bias. The only other thing I hear is that if you can't afford an expensive Sony TV, then buy a cheap Westinghouse, which isn't bad advise.

Sony does make very good TV's, but when I see polls showing that Sony is most people's favorite movie studio, I begin to scratch my head because that just doesn't seem right. It's a good studio, but the best - no way! That's just my opinion, though.

you are right....I just bought a flat panel LCD from sony....I wanted the samsung, but they didn't have any in stock....so I went sony instead even though samsung had 2 hdmi....vs 1 hdmi...

I wish I had waited another 3 weeks for the Sharp 32" 1080p LCD that is out now...

that would have been the right buy....

I have a stable of sony products...and am almost a sony *****...but all of these purchases except my PS3 and my sony ericsson phone/headsets could have all gone either way...

to think that sony is the cream of the crop....well...it's good...but I could find superiod companies in almost every category that sony deals in....

but they are reliable...and if you have the money...sony isn't bad at all...it's just not mandatory...and sony certainly dominates a few areas...but they aren't "high end" IMO...except in TV's, portable devices or videogames..

MGM and possibly Columbia/Tristar weren't always seperate options for fav. movie studio in that thread so Sony with 20% MGM ownership was the most relevant option for some.

That's a pretty wide brush your using to paint everyone here with....the only things that I have that are Sony are the PS3, a SD DVD player (now retired thanks to the PS3) and a universal remote (that's for sale by the way ).
Obviously I am not including movie titles.

I have 4 full HT setups (been doing this awhile) - none of the them have any Sony except for the 2 items I already mentioned....

Video camera, pic camera - all non-Sony.

I pick what I think is best in every category....

Hey I was just like you, all I ever hear from people around me was buying Sony products. I wanted to give other companies a chance. Panasonic was my top brand. Sharp is good. Hitachi and JVC aren't bad... but the time I bought a PS3, I needed a 1080p LCD between 37" to 42". Sharp, Mitsubishi & Sony were the only ones at the time. I first bought a Mitsubishi, great LCDs with powered swirvel but the viewing angle wasn't that great. Same to Sharp, looking from the sides the picture got brighter or lighter. I brought it back and got a Sony, all I can say is 'wow!'. even though it's a little more expensive, it's worth it. The colors are nicer and more vivid, the viewing angle is flawless and the design is slick. I no longer have doubts about buying a Sony product.
