Default HD DVD player and 18 movies for $175 a good deal?

Title says it all. I've been looking for another Blu Ray or at least a backup Blu ray player to take some of the heat off my PS3.

A Friend is offering to sell me a Toshiba HD-a30 for $175 along with 18 movies (really good titles) and Battlestar Galactica season 1 all for $175.

This would make a good backup upconvert DVD player and I get some really good HD-DVD movies to boot. Should I buy? or just buy another Blu-ray player?

This may seem a bit biased but I think you should just stick to just buying the brand new BD player. I'm almost certain that all those movies that he has are already or will be out on BD.

Not worth it IMO. I'd just wait for the must have titles on blu and continue to grow that. I'm already unsure of what to do with my 20 HD DVD titles, they are pretty much worthless as is the POS player.

$150. It would make a good upconvertor as well. i still buy HD-DVDs in the clearance bins if I see them.

I wouldn't spend $175 on that.

why pay 175 on a dead technology when you have your bluray player as an upconvert already and can spend the money on blurays

Lowball him and see if he goes for it. If not... that is too much money for what you would be getting IMO.

That deal isn't terrible (but if you are going to go through with it, I would try and talk the price down if at all possible, like others here have said).

However, IMO (and I say this as someone who still have an HD-DVD player and some movies for it), at this point, with it being a dead format, I would just leave it alone and go with your original plan of getting a suplimental Blu-Ray player.

The benefits of this deal (even if you do talk down the price) are really short term based. I think another BD player would make a better investment.

Even if you have a lot of DVDs that you still watch (and therefore you could use them in this HD-DVD player), depending on the type of collector you are, over time your BD collection will grow, and you will be watching Blu-Ray movies more and more.

This other player will not help with taking the 'heat' off of your PS3 in that case.

Plus, over time, your HD needs might change. If you get that other player now, down the road you may get another HDTV for another room, and if you wanted to, you could hook the PS3 to one TV and the BD player to the other. Or you may just have other needs entirely, and the HD-DVD player, with the lot of movies that only work on it, may just end up being in the way more than anything.

It's up to you. But IMO, you'd be better off going with your original plan.

I'm with MONKEY on this one....for the money you can select from several different Blu-Ray players...

Someone would have to pay me to take his/her HD-DVD player and discs.

If he's his friend, he should cut him a deal. I cut all my friends deals when I sell them stuff. I don't charge him more, because he's a friend.

I would honestly feel bad selling my HD DVD player to a friend, even a stranger unless they were some of the die hards from AVS/HDD It just doesn't make sense to invest, you're player dies it is going to be a pain.. Blu-ray player dies, just pop over to any store and buy a replacement.

I'm half tempted to list my HD DVD stuff on here and just donate the money to charity. I only kept it for the Bourne Trilogy and Riddick really but honesetly haven't turned it on in probably a year. Kicking myself for not dumping it near the end of the war when the titles were worth something.

At least I only paid $99 for a player with 10 movies (3 times, lol)
