Default Superman Returns question

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and to blue-ray. I recently (just today) got from Netflix Superman Returns (a favorite of mine). I put it in and couldn't wait to see the Blue-ray goodness...wow was I shocked!!!! The picture wasn't as clear as I thought it would be. In the flying logo opening you could see jagged lines in the text and in several shots when Ma Kent is in the kitchen as Supes returns to Earth there is a lot of grain in the picture as well in several other places in the beginning of the film.

So my question is, are there 2 different verisons of Superman Returns in Blue-Ray? Could the poor quality be that I good one of the first releases from Netflix?

My player is fine, I just got Wall-E from Netflix and wow was totally impressed. In fact that is one I will buy just to show off to friends how great Blue-ray is...also 2001 is freaking awesome on my player as well.

Anyone with insight to this Superman Returns question please let me know.

Thanks in advance!
Greg

There are two different versions of Superman Returns however the video encode is the same on both. The film is supposed to be reminiscient of older films, and softer in style. That being said the issues that you mention usually point to settings in the television rather than the disc. Make sure that you turn down the sharpness setting in your player as it could be adding those jaggies and digital noise.

Not that it matters for the video, but what are the audio codec options on the disc you have?

I'm curious which version of the movie that Netflix is shipping.

I just got Superman Returns on Blu-Ray and it is indeed the re-issued disc with TrueHD Dolby and PCM audio. At first I noticed picture quality was not up to the standards I've come to expect from blu-ray, but I did play with my TV adjustments and got a nicer, crisper picture. So definitely play with your TV settings

It is weird the film starts right up. There isn't a menu. There isn't an option for sound just languages. Maybe that is the way it is suppose to be. The sound option just shows (when I push the audio button on my remote) Multichan 1, 2, and or 3...english, spanish, and french.

That's how all Warner titles are, they start off with the movie directly.

I have a question... how do you know which version you're buying (if it's online of course)? What I mean to ask is when was the re-release issued?

My question is.....why did this movie suck so bad? Kevin Spacey was a great Lex.

I have this movie with the TrueHD and PCM and it looks and sounds awesome. If your other movies look "fine", I'd say it's the disc.

I couldn't find this movie at any store I searched, and ended up ordering on-line. That's your best bet.

tigtat77, I don't know where you live, but they had it at the Best Buy in Mira Mesa. I checked the back of the copies they had in stock and they had the new version with TrueHD. Of course, the price is $29.99, so it depends on if you want to pay that much.

Well there's a couple of reasons it looks the way it does, number 1 it was filmed to simulate the look of the original Superman, so it was filmed "soft". Number 2, it is hampered by not being an optimized for Blu-ray encode, it's actually a bitstarved HD DVD encode ported over to the Blu-ray. Number 3, it suffers from some DNR as well. But hey, if you've ever seen the standard DVD of it you'll thank God you have the Blu-ray.

You know I always was hesitant about ordering from them, being afraid I'd get the DD 5.1 version and all. And I have either been completely blind and ignorant or they have recently changed the listing of Superman Returns info to include (True HD Audio) next to it when you are viewing the title. So I ended up getting that, Tango & Cash plus American History X for roughly $54. Not bad. Plus their pre-order shipping is always A+.........Thanks all.

You need an HDMI cable, stat!

Believe me, I started out the same way.

Okay, scratch that.

What size/type of tv do u have, and have you ever changed the picture settings since it was taken out of the box? If so, it might be the disc, because My HD DVD version has no grain(using the same transfer).

Bitrates never mattered between the two formats.

Well, yeah! They're the same bitrates, the same encode.

@ OP, yes, this is not really a reference title... obviously.
