Question is 720p better than 1080i?

i have a 62" Hitachi LCD projection HDTV. it is 3 years old, so max output is 1080i. i just bought College Hoops 2K7 for my PS3...this game outputs at 480p, 720p, and 1080i. i have the display settings of the PS3 set to accept 480p, 720p, and 1080i. when i turn on the PS3 it is at 1080i. when the game loads, it switches to 720p. but isn't 1080i better? so why doesn't it run the game at 1080i? if 720p was a better signal...wouldn't televisions broadcasts use it instead of 1080i? i am just trying to get the best picture quality from my games and this whole thing is confusing me. what do you guys have to say?

720p has twice the frame rate of 1080i, but fewer pixels on the screen at one time. Which is 'better' is subjective. Both are considered 'high definition'. ABC, ESPN, and Fox all broadcast 720p. Probably Hoops was designed for 720p. If that's true, if you played it at 1080i the PS3 would be scaling it. The best thing to do is to try it both ways and use whatever output looks best to you.
