Default Hate my rating? Let me know.

Hi all,

I was rating a few home theatres using a method of my own which made sense to me, but has obviously made everybody whom I rated think I'm a Grade-A prick so if I've rated your system, please let me know and I'll delete the rating.

Thanks,
Paul

There have been a few folks that have made threads or references in their threads about how they got low ratings, snarky or nasty comments. I say to them, and to you, if you put your stuff out there to be rated, you must take the good with the bad.

You shouldn't apologize, at all.

As long as you can justify your rating then there isn't anything to apologize over. Now if you were doing it just to be an ass, than thats a completely different story.

I have a small suggestion. Instead of putting the surround speaker as the first pic in your gallery, I would chose a pic of whole setup as the first one everyone sees. Move the surround pic somewhere down below .
Also corner placement of TV is not my thing, but everyone has their own taste .

See, that's the problem with the rating system - I don't know the limitations of your house. Are you renting? Does your partner hate your home theatre? Are you a student or otherwise cash-strapped? Do your neighbours not allow you to play things loud? Does your system, although good to look at, sound terrible because of an untreated room acoustic?

Because I didn't know any of these things, I decided to reserve a 5/5 rating for a system that completely visually recreates the theatrical experience. That means a front projector, tiered cinema seating, proper decor, etc. By that metric, a room that still looks like a loungeroom could never get above 3/5 unless it was truly exceptional. My own system only gets a 2/5 because it doesn't have a subwoofer, the screen has to mount on the long wall rather than the short one because of the bay window at the side, it has exposed cabling and the couch is up against the back wall - all completely unlike any cinema I've ever been to.

It's hard to encapsulate all that into a rating though, and it's upset a couple of people, so best to just delete them all.

Out of all the people who have rated systems much less than what we feel they should be, given the general consensus of prior votes by others on our systems, you are the only one that has given an explanation. And you are to be commended for doing so.

Now that I have had a chance to think about it, I kinda like what Paul based his judgements on. Maybe it's never possible for us to attain that level of sophistication, but it does make significant sense.

It has also taught me a lesson. I'm not going to be as sensitive towards a lousy rating as before, regardless of whether the "voter" is just messing around or gives a qualified opinion. I like my system and it brings me tremendous joy..... And that is all that matters!

John

im pretty forgiving when it comes to my ratings. its not hard to impress me, so i hand out 4-5's alot. seldomly i give less than four, matter a fact, if i feel a room deserves less than a four, i just dont rate it so i guess when someone gives me less than four i get a little pissy, but like someone mentioned, if you cant take it, dont post your chit up.

ratings are good for the fun of it,but I do think ratings should be left with comments. Someone left me a 1 and said nothing, others have left a 10 and said nothing.

Personally I am more interested in hearing what people have to say than an overall score. The score is pointless without a comment.

Good point. I'll start leaving comments exclusively, but it's still hard to know if a member wants to hear constructive criticism or simply 'Looks great! AAA+!'

I guess that depends, most dedicated theaters are should usually be rated on a "Room is finished" term, in which case I tend to stay away from suggestions and usually post what I think of the room. Although I usually keep my personal feelings about color choices and layout to myself. There are many theaters in the gallery that are amazing and deserve a 10 even if they are not my taste and I take that into consideration.

Most livingroom setups you are usually rating just the equipment which is usually ever changing, so base your rating on the current equipment and possibly leave a suggestion on how they could get more out of it by mating it with "X" piece of equipment.

It's a little tough sometimes, especially when you can't account for all the variables like the OP brought up. My personal criteria is a little less stringent, but that's just based on my sole opinion. I rate by overall appearance, cables that show vs. hidden, front speakers that match vs. mismatched and a few other similar criteria. I don't take taste in decor into account, although if you use a closed style TV stand for your components as opposed to something that's wide open, I'm liable to give you an extra point because it helps keep wires and cables out of sight a lot better.

As someone stated before, if I would rate someone's system below about a 7, I usually don't post a rating.
