I know I am probably going to come across not knowing what I am talking about but this is why I am asking! Is 5.1 digital sound able to be downloaded from the internet? If not then wouldn't this encourage the public to continue purchasing new albums and movies?! I sure hope so!

I asked myself this a while and I am of the opinion that high definition sound is a must for future use. CD's are simply too old and limited to be useful any longer and this format with it's huge storage size can enable high definition recording to replace conventional cd. My guess is that there will be audio only blu discs with high sample rate, high bitrate and multi channel to go along with video or maybe there will audio only discs to replace cd's and vynil.

I personally don't see 5.1 or anything else saving the music industry. With the mp3 format prefered by most ordinary people and iPods going strong I just don't see anything helping to save the pre-recorded music industry. And as anxious as I am for Blu-ray for movies, IMO music in 5.1 just isn't that exciting. I had bought about a dozen DVD-As and ten SACDs and I've since sold off most of them. Multi-channel music just isn't that great. IMO the separation of instruments and background vocals in different speakers sounds quite weird for most of the 5.1 music I've heard.

Well I have listened to surround sound and I like it because it feels good to me and is very natural . It's how music is supposed to be .
I don't believe mp3 will be overwhelming format for music distribution for several reasons. It's low quality even to cd and it becomes very obvious when you crank up the sound. People want to sample music on mp3 , not necessarily buy it on mp3. They also want a physical format of music and some memorabilia |

Sooooooo is 5.1 downloadable from the internet? Also why would the discs have to be either audio blu-ray discs or movie blu-ray discs? Aren't D.V.D.-audios or what have you both music and film on one side? Even so they could still making them dual discs like the ones comming out now that are d.v.d. on one side and audio on the other. The options should be quit plentiful. With an original c.d. you can still fit a second disc in the package not increasing the size of it AND the second disc could be either blu-ray on both sides or again a dual disc.

There is a surround sound mp3 in development
http://www.betanews.com/article/MP3_...el/1102131014t Very soon , I expect multichannel, high bit rate and high sample rate to really enjoy the music and give that immersive studio like feel for the music. I also feel that future music releases will be multimedia heaven with lots of extras and something like blu ray disd is the only thing that can handle that for now. |

MP3, AAC and WMA all support multichannel music. The authoring tools just aren't very prevalent. Mixing 5.1 is pretty difficult. Even if we were talking lossless music the bandwidth would be 6-8Mbps and that's easy fare for just about any optical device nowadays |

There was no way to deliver it before on the disc except on dvd in a very compressed format. Today's professional music is recorded at high definition but is mixed down to fit the cd  . Most of the recording programs today produce 24bit/ 96khz and if needed in surround sound. That is then mixed down to a mediocre format like cd at measly 16bit /44 khz stereo. Now let's do some math, for cd 16bit x 44100khz x 2channels gives us 1 411 200 bits per second which is the bandwidth for a cd. If we measure high definition audio produced in studios today, it goes like this 24bits x 96 000 hz x 6 channels which is 13 824 000 bits per second. Netiher cd nor dvd audio or video can handle this bandwidth. Dvd is topped at about 10mbs. Thus , even dvd uses heavy compression , namely MLP in this case . Blu Ray is supposed to solve this problem as it can handle 36mbs at least and more if needed  . |

Ahhhhh I see your point
![]() Yes we need the further proliferation of HDMI to handle the uncompressed multichannel audio. Toslink cannot handle it. I think we're coming close however. I think that the new Dolby Digital + and DTS-HD might actually push DVD-Audio and SACD to the curb. I'm just hoping the encoding tools are affordable. I don't mind lossless compression. There seems to be plenty of people happy with FLAC and Shorten so I assume lossless 5.1 should please our ears. |
