Default Just ordered a PS3

Add one more to the Blu-Ray camp!

Got some good news today, so to celebrate I've ordered a PS3 from play.com

Fingers crossed, I'll have it friday morning.

Any set-up tips for a novice? (will be using it with a non-HD 42" plasma but that will soon change )

Welcome Rob.

Top decision sir, not only from a Blu-ray point of view, but also from a gaming one.

Tips:
Get an HDTV as soon as possible.
Use HDMI.
Output the audio to a decent cinema system.
Get the bluetooth remote.
Remember that when you're playing a game, you don't have to periodically lift the controller cable over your legs.

Enjoy!

Make sure you've got an RGB Scart or S-Video cable ready for it! An old PS1 or PS2 one will do. With a display that large you'll want the best SD picture possible until you upgrade.

Going through all the Xross Media Bar, especially the settings can entertain you for hours.

A component cable would be ideal of course, although you'll have to make alternative arrangements for the sound.

What cables does it come with as stock?

I've seen ED plasma's at CC. I guess you can feed them a 720p signal. Not sure about 1080i

Crappy old composite with a scart adapter block.

He speaks the truth, I forgot most SD/ED plasma's have component inputs, definitely go for that if it is supported by your tv. Again, PS2 component cables will do the job just fine.

Make sure you download the latest PS3 firmware update if it doesn't already have one. There's a separate firmware update thread on this board.

Also, never buy another standard definition DVD again. Only buy blu-ray discs from here out. Blu-ray all the way babe. And most of all, ENJOY!!

Have you bought your first game/movie?

My advice is to get the firmware updates immediately and set up your playstation network account as these take the longest.

These are the 3 things I recommend:
Buy it from a B&M store.
Keep your receipt in a safe place.
Get an extended warranty.

Congratulations on your purchase ! You have made a very wise decision. At this point you should be thinking about how to set up your wifi connection.
