Default Ninja Scroll

I dont know if this has been covered before in another thread, but I caught the last half of this movie on Cartoon Network and thought it was awesome. Im not much on anime, but this is something Id like to pick up. Is this on blu anywhere? Was this a series or just the movie? I figured this would be available in Japan but not sure about US.

Its not available yet, but, what you saw on Cartoon Network was a tornup mockery of one of THE best anime's of all time....do yourself a favor...go rent this movie on DVD and rewatch it in its entirety....you will be shocked with how much they cut out.

Ninja Scroll is definitely one of the best anime movies of all-time. If you have seen that it is all downhill from there.

Ninja Scroll, to me, would look terrible in HD. It's excellent the way it is but I doubt the animation style would transfer well to blu-ray, unless they revamped it a lot and that's not something I want them to do.

Jubei Ninpucho (a.k.a. Ninja Scroll) is traditional hand painted cel animation on 35mm film. No reason why it shouldn't look much better in HD. In fact, the animation is more detailed than a lot of recent productions.

That makes no sense to me...why would it look "terrible" in HD.

I'd have to second this. I'm not really a fan of anime, but someone recommended this to me once, and I didn't regret it for a second. Very VERY good movie. As jkwest mentioned, a bunch must've been cut for CN.

It's a good movie but I have to agree that considering how old it is (1993), I doubt the PQ would have that HD pop, unless it would be thoroughly remastered.

I rented the SD DVD. The way it started, I just turned it off. Maybe I'll give it another go down the line. I'm was just surprised more than anything else. To be truthful, I didn't know the rating for this movie and wasn't in that mood. Glad no kids were around.

I can't imagine this movie on CN. There's too much gore and rape. And the movie itself wasn't even good.

It's possible the original film elements may not be in great shape, so it's difficult for me to predict how much of a benefit we will see from a blu-ray transfer, but I disagree with what appears to be your reasoning. The team of Kawajiri-san and Minowa-san produces animation with incredible detail. While some may not find the frame rate up to levels they prefer, the detail in the original artwork is far beyond what can be captured in SD. I've seen hundreds of the cels from this series first-hand, so I can tell you with confidence you haven't yet seen what was filmed. Now, having said that, it's possible I'm not being entirely fair. Some people do have a problem with great transfers of hand-painted material to blu-ray, in that you can actually detect the presence of the cels. This can make the final product a little less immersive. If your concern is that it will look like photographs of sheets of plastic, that may be a valid concern, but if you think, because it is a little older, that the level of detail and quality of artwork isn't up to modern production levels, you will find yourself pleasantly surprise. The level of detail in anime has actually gone down quite significantly since the mid-to-late 90s. I can't wait to see some of the other Kawajiri/Minowa titles like Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust transferred. Even blu-ray will struggle to capture the level of detail in that one.

If you think anime is just a cartoon then you don't really know anime.

It's Japanese animation, so yeah. These guys are obsessed with monsters on helpless girls (preferably with several penis-shaped tentacles).

I'm not sure I'm ready to call a 1993 movie "very old". That would also make a movie like Jurassic Park "very old". It was the gateway anime title for a lot of people, though.

I ordered it on laserdisc back in '93 or '94 solely because Kawajiri was attached to it. I was pleasantly surprised by my blind buy. I ended up fansubbing it and showing it at a local anime club.
