Default LPCM Question/ HD Audio

Hey guys, I have a Sony BD-300 and an Onkyo 506. They have multi channel outs and ins. It is hooked via rca from the player to the receiver that and it is set on Multi Channel In. Video is HDMI.
The setting on the player menu is PCM for HDMI and Downmix PCM for DD and DTS.
Playing a blu it says multi channel on the receiver but no PCM. Am I still getting LPCM sound?

From what you've described you have your BD player's audio feeding the receiver via analog inputs. Therefore your receiver isn't getting any digital audio which is what LPCM is - raw 1's and 0's of digital audio. So LPCM isn't going to show up on the receiver's display. It is correct that Multichannel is all your getting.

As long as you have a BD's audio track set to LPCM, that is what your getting - an analog converted LPCM audio waveform coming down those RCA connectors.

Gotcha. If it is True HD or DTS MA how will it be sent? Just compressed multichannel Dolby Digital or DTS. With the 506 if audio was sent via HDMI only can I get uncompressed or HD sound?
Thanks

As long as your BDP-300 has a newer version of the firmware, then you should be able to hear lossless uncompressed sound. As mentioned before your BDP is doing all the decoding, so your reciever is passing the signal through, this is why your receiver is showing "multi-channel".

Take into consideration that when you listen via multichannel RCA's that 10-15db of low frequency will be lost(bass won't be as loud). I'm not familiar with your receiver, but if it has a bass management feature then you can boost your bass @ 7dB, the remaining can be adjusted from the back of your sub by increasing the volume. Now you Should be on your way to true lossless sound.

Here is a link to determining what firmware you have and how to upgrade to the newest version
