Default LG GGW-H20L not recognizing BD-RE

Hi,

I have newly purchased a new PC with Vista 64-bit, and it came with an LG GGW-H20L blu-ray burner, and already I have problems.

The burner came with an LG BD-RE disc (25 GB). I finished editing a home video, and wanted to burn it to this disc. The movie is about 7 MB.

When burning (in Sony Architect), I first got a message that the burning was successful - after about 3 seconds. Clearly; it was not successful, and the disc contained nothing.

I tried a different software for burning (Nero 9), but then I got a message saying there was not enough space on the disc! But the disc is empty, and brand new!

I tried formatting it, but Windows could not do it. I tried looking at the properties of the disc, and windows tells me:

Used space: 0 byte
Free space 0 byte

What the h**l is going on?

Any firmware update available for your burner?

Yeah, I downloaded the YL05 yesterday, but the one I got was only for XP (even though it said it was for Vista), so I'll have to find a different one today. Do you think it'll solve my problem?

Thanks for replying!

Hm. No.

I updated the firmware, but I already had the newest one. Nothing happened afterwards.

You could also try erasing the disc from Nero Burning ROM using the "Erase Rewritable Disc"

I'm using the same LG burner as you with latest firmware (YL05), and one thing I discovered is that it has troubles formatting Mitsubishi BD-RE 25Gb media (haven't tested other brands yet).

Using Windows Explorer or Ulead BD DiscRecorder results in an error when trying to format.

With Nero, the format is only partially completed before it spits the disc out.

Interestingly though, this partially formatted BD-RE (by Nero) is recognized as blank by Cyberlink Powerproducer (blu-ray authoring app), and can be successfully written to without any problems whatsoever.

So give Nero a try.

Other than that, I have read many reports on newegg that the free LG BD-RE disc that comes supplied with retail LG burners is junk. So maybe the problem is the media itself.

(I don't have any LG BD-RE disc since my LG burner is the stripped-down OEM version, and I ordered my Mitsubishi BD-RE media through ebay)

I discovered that ImgBurn can successfully (and completely) format the Mitsubishi BD-RE disc (in quick or full mode) using LG's blu-ray burner.

So anyone having problems formatting their BD-RE media should definitely give this program a try. It may work even when all others fail.
