What I want to know is how much data this thing is moving in one hour of gaming. Most if not all ISP's have a cap on how much data you can download (it's in the fine print of your contract) go over the cap and they charge you $XXX.XX a MB or GB your over.

I think you have it backwards Oddiophile, most do not have caps from my experience. Now with the increase in demand, we are seeing it more and more. The local cable company caps all of it's home services, unless you pay like the $20 extra a month for unlimited. That's why we went with slower, but uncapped DSL.

One of the posts says that like 71% of the homes has 2mbps internet... I dont think so lol, lots of people are still using dial up. Maybe 71% of homes with broadband internet. Ours is 320kbps/240kbps, with low latency, so I have no issues at all with gaming on PC or PS3, but I'm sure it would be lacking this new system.

You know, it seems like every now and then some random company nobody has ever heard of before decides to try and make a video game console.

....and eeeeevery time they do, they always brand it as the console that will DESTROY all the others!

....and eeeeeevery time they are dead wrong

history dictates this will happen...again...

I'll side with history....especially since it sounds way more like a gimmick than anything else.

"Imagine you could stream top end games to your TV without buying a console!"

.....

1. So how much would we have to pay per play? Because I guarantee there would probably be no actual ownership of any of the games. You'd probably have to pay per play until you beat the game, and when you did....it's not a part of your collection or anything, it's just gone. Awesome. You know, there is a point to actually OWNING a PHYSICAL COPY of something. That's one of the reasons Blu-ray is so popular.

2. How do they plan on convincing the companies that make these top end games to develop for them? Wouldn't that just take way too much time and effort and force them to release games so much later than consoles that nobody would give a damn about their little "toy"?

"Imagine".....but reality is so much more fun!

I can see this being the next system that Xbots decide to use. Hey, at least they won't be supporting Micro$haft anymore.

This is why I think Xbots will fall for this system. Aside from a ridiculous purchase price, this system will obviously charge you a monthly/yearly fee much like XBox Live. And, they will fall for it as they are already use to paying that service fee. And, you can bet that the fee itself will be quite unreasonable as that is the only place where the game developers will get their money for creating content for the community.

Seems like a lot of people (in this thread, and the numerous other ones) seem to be against the idea based on the fact that they like their PS3 ???????? Wouldn't you welcome another system? Shouldn't you try it before dismissing it? If you like games...... more is better right?

I don't have a need for a gaming system, but if I did, I'd at least try a new one

If it was a new platform, then I would definitely give it a try. This is trying to take game ownership completely out of the equation!!!

I don't have a need for a gaming system, but if I did, I'd at least try a new one
My only issue with it is it's not really a new gaming system, it is designed to replace other ones. It will allow somebody with a lower rate computer to be able to play games that are spec'ed out higher then what they have. It won't have any exclusive content, it's just servers that run existing games.

Now the one major downside that I've seen. They already stated that they are not going to be a "netflix/gamefly" and have older games. Once the game comes off the server that's it, you can't play it via OnLive anymore. For people who horde their games and still play games from 10 years ago this is a major drawback for the system.

The upside to this is that there will be a lot less cheating since the game will be run on remote servers versus somebodys home system, so it's harder to have cheat programs in place. It will also reduce piracy as it will be harder to download a game to a remote server that you have no control over. It will also open up the gates for a lot of people that want to play these games but just can't afford the bleeding edge gaming rigs required for halfway decent gameplay.

I think it will be a great niche product, it just won't really fill any needs of mine, so I will pass on it. I would rather have my own system at home running a game that I own then be forced to pick off a probably limited supply of games.

I don't know if you are missing something or I, or maybe the endgate article is not verry good. But it is not a system

What if you could stream games, any game, over a decent broadband connection to your PC or Atom-based netbook
the issue with PCs was always that you don't have the right interface, so how does DL video of the game you are playing helps out with that? Yes if I understand it correctly the game is playing out on the server and screen captures are coming to your PC, so any moderate PC will be able to play the most convoluted game, but my guess is that people that like PC gaming might like it but people that like consoles will not change.

People that like PC gaming will hate it

PC gaming is defintately based on penis size to a large extent. Tricking out your rig, how many pixels you can push and such.

This is for JoeSixPack, and frankly, I don't see how it can possibly work, especially for any game with multiplayer. 1ms latency on 4mbps or so 720p video? In their dreams, especially as more and more people connect via wifi which will in and of itself adds 3-4ms to ping.

Frankly any game of any complexity will likely be unplayable in a real world situtation, especially mirror's edge that relies so much on timing. I'll bet you they'll be running a custom versino with a much much larger margin of error for starters.
