Default Future of HD

When I first heard of High Definition I didn't think it would be anything great. I thought it was just a TV built to look wider. Then when I watched my first blu-ray movie I was blown away by the quality. It was like a whole new experience... I found myself watching everything in the background (which usually looks pixellated on DVDs).

Now this makes me wonder... what's next? Can it get any better than this? I can't imagine what will top it. Do you guys have any thoughts on this?

It can get alot better than this but that'll probably be for a long time before they get to the consumer market. Enjoy HD now cause it'll be here for a while

NTSC has been around for what, 60-70 years? It took the industry more than a decade to decide on the currently available HDTV formats and connector technologies, and there still isn't industry consensus. I don't see a better format coming along during my lifetime--at least not while I can still hear up to 11,000 Hz.

I read awhile back that Sony had applied for patents in Japan for displays that interact directly w/ your optic nerve. In other words, things look better than humans are capable of seeing them. No joke. Apparently our eyes are the defect. The article stated the tech was at least 15-20 years away but they are thinking in that direction.

Yea now that seems cool and scary at the same time. I mean, I wouldn't want to see someone's actual cells and stuff while watching a movie.

We've still got a load more to go yet, HD is only the beggining. Remeber that the origional source masters are still like 4k in resolution so we've got definitely some better technology on the way in the next 20 years.

it can get better with 3D, maybe a little bit more improvement in resolution, also convenience as well....

they can make it look only so much better....but they can add certain features as I've said with 3D etc....to make it worth forking over more money for something new....

I'd like BD and downloads to co-exist...and then let one die off by customer response..

I've always been intrigued by the idea of 3D but i guess it is nowhere as refined as it should be to deliver that ultimate experience just yet.

My question is... how would 3D work? We're not talking about 3D glasses here. probably new TVs yet again.

yuup....and a higher resolution...

we'll need the higher resolution to handle this probably and a whole new TV....

maybe the small TV that Sony has in the works for about 5 years down the road where it's paper thin, bendable and durable...

you'll be able to just slap it on your wall or something and it will stand out....

I expect that to come in about 10-15 years....maybe later...and I think they'll milk another format before then...

After seeing Crank... I have no idea how a higher resolution would look better.

We are the Borg. You will be assimilated...and please trim your nose hairs.

Too bad the general masses only accept one revolution at a time.

On a similar vein (no pun intended ), the whole thing about 24/25/50/60 frames per second is a funny old thing too. It's worth knowing or noting that the human brain generally 'captures' around 17 images per second - more than fast enough for life.

However, when a human is placed in an dangerous or life-threatening situation the capture speed doubles (approximately), although still nowhere near 60 images per second. This is why when people recount accidents they often say 'it felt like slow motion'.

So why we should be able to detect motion judder whilst sitting relaxed on a sofa watching the tele is beyond me.

I'm going to come out with it and say your wrong.

I was playing resistance online on the PS3 and in one stage, i had a sniper rifle zoomed in, was looking at somebody that just happened to be looking up at me with a rocket launcher. I seem to remember that particular thing seemingly slow down and last longer than it did which was a couple of seconds but lasted almost a second or two more in my memory of it.

So you can get thise sense of slow down from your sofa in front of your TV, so i claim you wrong.

LOL! You've taken the point at an odd angle somewhat as I didn't say it wasn't possible to get a sense of time slowing down whilst sitting on a sofa.

I ended with saying; " So why we should be able to detect motion judder whilst sitting relaxed on a sofa watching the tele is beyond me."

Read the post again and make sure you're on the right wave length, oh and it's "you're not your".

LOL! I get ya!

Seriously though, have a scan on the web for 'flicker fusion threshold'. You were probably experiencing the same sort of tension as when one is put in danger in real life. Trust me, 'Resistance' got my heart thumping many times as it is an immersive environment and one tends to become gripped in the task at hand (shooting the Chimeran's) rather than being concious of where one actually is.

So yes, you can experience the sense of time slowing on the sofa, but only if the situation copies a tense situation in which the body would normally react to as one of endangerment.
