Im curious, is blu-ray's only output resolution 1080p? Because my TV's resolution is only 720p and 1080i. I have it set at 720p.
I have a ps3 and two blu-ray movies ..casino royale and x-men 3. But when i watch them there is no way it is HD there is grain just like on standerd dvd. So, again my question: Is blu-ray ONLY 1080p? If it is so much for me supporting blu-ray ![]() |

I believe it's because those movies were shot with film. That's where the grain comes from. If you watched a movie like 'Crank' which was shot with an HD camera then you wont see the grain. My 1080i TV still displays 'Crank' nicely.

Blu-ray movies are at 1920x1080 pixels (at least all that I know of are), but the output depends on your player, not the disc itself. The grain at the beginning of Casino Royale is intentional. I haven't seen X3 on BD, so I can't comment on it. Most movies will have some grain, to give it a somewhat "authentic movie" feel, but it probably is bad if you're seeing the same grain as a regular DVD, as it takes away from the clarity.
You might rent these movies on regular DVD, to compare. Also check your video and input settings on both your TV and PS3. As was previously asked, how are you connecting the PS3 to the TV? Whatever you have, if you can connect another media component to the same input, try that and see how it looks, so you can see if it's just the input. Any technical info you can give (ie. output resolution of PS3, type of TV, etc.) will be helpful. |

Theres a reason you will be able to see the grain, it's cause the resolution is so high and the picture so sharp, it shows more.
Film = Grain. So don't worry too much bout it but some titles will be more grainy than others. Crank will have NO grain cause it was shot in HD on camera rather than film which produces grain. |

If you have a ps3, it will downscale from 1080i to 720p now.

Make sure you have the latest firmware installed (1.8) as the PS3 will only downscale to 720P with this version. However, you mentioned that your display does 1080i. The PS3 will output blu-ray at 1080i, although I'm not sure what it does if you de-select 1080i and 1080p (I'm guessing pre-1.8 you'd get a 480 image).

Blu-ray was 1080p only on the PS3 until the latest 1.8 firmware update, now they've got more output options.

The PS3 supports all resolutions if you have downloaded firmware release 1.8. I find it strange that you are seeing grain on regular DVD. The resolution is poor which generally removes the ability to see grain. Higher resolution is almost synonymous with seeing grain. Grain is film. Sometimes the directors decide to add grain to a movie shot with HD cameras to give it a film look. In short, to remove grain is to remove sharpness. Maybe you need to turn down your sharpness setting on your TV (or get the TV checked...especially if you are seeing lots of grain on regular DVDs). https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2324#post82324 check out post #15 and look at the pictures in post #16 If you picture does not look like that, chances are you are doing something wrong. |

Casino Royale has little fine grain in most scenes after the pre-credits sequence (and I watch it larger than you do). X-Men III has gritty pinpoint grain that gives it a very sharp detailed image (look at Beast's face details! and they're on the blue channel!) which makes it look better than the two anamorphic 35mm print presentations I saw it in on theaters. The other BR member's adivice is good.
