Default Will Blu Ray movies only output at 1080p on the PS3?

The question is in the title!

Thanks...

At this moment it is either 1080i/1080p60 or 480p. Since every HDTV can accept 1080i, thats a good set standard to go with. The PS3 scaled to 720p before but now defaults to 1080i. This will be fixed in a future firmware upgrade. 1080p24 support is also expected.

I read somwhere that the PS3 used to output at 720p, 1080i and 1080p but after a firmware update, it lost it's 720p capability.

Rumour has it that the firmware coming round the eruopean release of the PS3 will fix this problem

I own a PS3 with the latest firmware(1.51), have seen 720p settings disabled from System Settings. However, I think it gets upscaled(probably not the right word) to 1080i. I own a Sony TV with 720p capability and not 1080p. Bluray movies look as good as Discovery channel. Hope this helps

i am still a little confused, I have a 40" SONY LCD (native 720p / 1080i) if I play BD movies via HDMI PS3, should I set it as native 720p or 1080i for best performance, thank?

720p is techically a little higher than 1080i. 1440 lines interlaced to be exact. Try both and see which you like better, that's what I would do. Some people see no difference at all.

1080i has more horizontal resolution than 720p, resulting in more overall resolution, so there is no way that 720p can be higher than 1080i.

No 720p is technicaly a little lower than 1080i

720p x 1280 = 921,600 progressive pixels

1080i x 1920 = 2,073,600 interlaced pixels

If you're playing p material (or even i material) optimized for progressive displays and the 1080 LCD TV deinterlaces it correctly you get 2,073,600 progressive pixels

If it's 1080i material optimized for interlaced displays (like 60i CRTs) the image is filtered so you get 0.70707 Kell factor x 1080i x 1920 = 764 x 1920 = 1,466,180 progressive pixels

If the display deinterlaces it incorrectly you get 540p x 1920 = 1,036,800 progressive pixels, which is still more than 921,600 progressive pixels, and it may not look as smooth as 720p but that's a problem wiith the hardware not the format.

On a 720p displays the numbers are respectively:

720 x 1280 = 921,600 progressive pixels
720 x 1280 = 921,600 progressive pixels
540 x 1280 = 691,200 progressive pixels

So the results, specially on a 720p display, is depending on the deinterlacer, but not on 1080i being less than 720p.

The PS3 outputting 1080i material in 1080i, like the Destiny's Child concert, on a 1080p display that deinterlaces it corretly, looks excellent.

Default Another i v p oddity

There is also the issue of the MPEG encoders.

There are "frame by frame" encoders/decoder and there are "field by field" encoders/decoders.

Clearly, only the "frame by frame" encoders/decoders are relevant to 720p and 1080p imagery.

However, both "frame by frame" and "field by field" can be used with any interlaced imagery, e.g., 1080i.

If the interlaced imagery is encoded "field by field" then only a "field by field" decoder can handle it. It's an interlace imagery stream every step of the way.

However, it is possible for a "frame by frame" encoder to de-interlace the imagery, encode it as if it were progressive, and then output an MPEG stream. The decoder then decodes it frame by frame and optionally can re-create the interlaced imagery stream. Then your monitor could again attempt to create a de-interlace image.

Frame by frame encoders/decoders are becoming the standard though field by field still exist for various purposes (e.g., systems that need exceptionally low latency).

Just another wrinkle to think about!

I would really like them to fix this because on my Samsung 720p DLP I sense a slight jitter from the PS3 that I don't get from native sources set at 720p.
