Default help! with connection question

My current ht set up is 6.1. I rarely use the rear center speaker. so is it possible to hook up an extra subwoofer instead, using the speaker wires from the rear center. Thanks

How is your current subwoofer connected? Is it passive or is it powered? Does it use regular speakers cable to power it from your receiver or does it use an RCA cable?

You can run another sub off your receiver LFE(subwoofer pre-out) by using a Y splitter( 1 male to 2 female).

I have a denon 789, and my current subwoofer is powered, and connected sub out avr to rca sub in on subwoofer. Im trying to get by without running any more cable, and right now the rear center speaker is behind the sofa, which i thought would be a nice spot for a second subwoofer.

That would be a good spot. Yes, use a y-splitter like Zippo showed you (the first one). You can get a cheaper one here.

Connecting two subwoofers to a receiver has nothing to do with the rear center speaker. You can leave the rear speaker as is and connect two subwoofers to the receiver with a Y adapter (1 male, 2 female) and two subwoofer cables.

I hope I did not misunderstand your question.

You would connect the y-splitter to the subwoofer pre-out connection you currently have and the other two subwoofer cables to it. The rear center may stay where it is. When you do connect both subwoofers, do not forget to calibrate them and post pictures.

big daddy. I know about the y splitting, I was just trying to see if i could get by with the other configuration because i have a speaker wall plate on the back wall that has banana plug connections for my R,L and rear center to plug into. this way i can use the rear center speaker cables for a subwoofer behind the sofa. If I use the y splitter i would have to run, and try to hide a subwoofer cable from the front of the room where my avr is to the back of the room. my wife may not like that. hope that makes since.

The amplifiers of powered subwoofers are attached to the subs. You cannot use the speaker wires for LFE applications. You have to purchase or build a passive sub. The amplifier of a passive sub can be next to your receiver. You can connect the LFE output of the receiver with a sub cable to the external amplifier and use speaker wires for the rear subwoofer.

That or you could get an RCA plate to have the RCA cable hid in the wall and the cable out of sight.

It's not possible. If your receiver doesn't have a second sub output jack, you need to connect an RCA splitter to your existing sub output jack on the receiver, or even at the back of the 1st sub.

As for not using your center rear channel, why not? I have a 6.1 channel setup too, and I have mine going all the time for surround sound tracks.

Don't let your center rear sit idle.
