Default Hard drive upgrade and Assassin's Creed II save game

Hey guys, I want to upgrade my 80GB hard drive to a 320GB but have a concern about the save game of Assassin's Creed II.

The Assassin's Creed II game save is copy protected so you can't just copy it to a USB key. The other option is doing a full system backup however I'm not sure if that will still copy it or not.

I looked up on the net and no real answer. Some people say doing a full system backup will copy the game save as long as it is the same PS3 and some people say it won't copy. Checking the guide about the system backup at playstaion.com says that it won't copy saves that are flagged copy protected.

So I wanted to ask and see if someone actually upgraded their hard drive on the same PS3 and the system backup utility was able to restore the game saves to the new hard drive.

When I swapped out HDD's the backup utility restored all of the game saves. I dont know however if any of those were copy protected.

Yes, it will copy. The Backup Utility and Data Transfer Utility will both copy copy-protected data.

This has been asked so many times, that someone should make a FAQ or something.

I wish someone would because I need to upgrade my HD soon and I've been wondering how to transfer everything over.

As far as I know, same PS3 hardware, backup is fine. If you replaced it or are moving to a new system, the games will not copy even with backup.

This. If it is just a harddrive swap to same PS3 all data will restore with no problems. If you try and backup to a new/different PS3 system, THAT is when items wont copy due to protection.

I just upgraded to a 500gig harddrive it was super easy.

Put an external harddrive or some storage device in the USB.
Use "Backup Utility" to back to external device.
(depending on size, could take a while. mine took 2 1/2 hours with 74 gig of data)

Replace hard drive (took me less than 10 mins super easy there are good faqs on that in the stickied threads at top of ps3 section)

It asks to reformate new drive. (took me less than a minute to format, but that could vary)

Put external drive back into USB, use use "Restore" within backup utility. (same amount of time needed to save it. so another 2 1/2 hours)

Done!

I didn't know if it was confirmed or not. I'll go ahead and add it to our FAQ thread.

So would I need a USB drive that will hold more than 60GB of info or would any size work? The only one I have is a puny 256MB that I've had for years.

It doesn't need to be at the max capacity of the PS3 drive.

Just look under the System Menu with how much space is currently occupied on the HD.

I looked the other night and I only have ~5000MB free on my 60GB drive.

All I needed to do, and I got EVERYTHING back. Game updates, DLC, saves, my music, pictures, videos, purchased PSN games and PS2 saves. The only thing I had to do is update my trophies by putting in the game which I had the trophies. NOTE: I think if you had trophies for a game you sold or traded in they will not show up on your PS3 but will still be in you account online.

I dont get why they would copy protect AC2 of all games. I hate when developers do that. Thankfully it doesnt happen too often

So I took the plunge and bought a 320GB and performed a backup, swapped the HDs and then restored.

The AC2 saves was there and it loaded just fine when I started the game. The only thing that was different is that the trophies started unlocking again although I platinumed the game. So I just quit the game and then resynched the trophies and that was it.

Still have to check other games but i'm happy so far.

Agreed, RB2 has the same thing as well which is even more annoying. You'd think the saves would be tied to just your system login/PSN ID. Oddly enough some PS2 games have it as well, found this out when I was backing up my system recently.
