20th Century Fox Stargate Universe 1.0 (2009)

Ok MGM/Fox will release Stargate Universe 1.0 (9 ep, 2 disc set) in Feb 2010
for the MSRP of 70$US or 90$CAD!!!!! witch mean it will be impossible to get under 65.99$ in Canada, it's the price of LOST SEASON 5!!!!!!!!

Yeah tell me about it.

It's a mediocre show, and is not worth $90 for half a season.

I actually really love the show (except for the episode 'Earth' which was painfully bad) but this is way overpriced. I mean, I bought the complete Stargate SG-1 box set (all 10 seasons) on dvd two weeks ago for $105 from Amazon and this will cost half of that.

I still don't know why some studios release volume sets and not just the entire season in a DVD/BD set.

Yes. They are crazy. The first half of the season has been 10 hours of television that a good editor & director could have told in 4. They need to shape up in the back half and release a complete season box at a reasonable price before I consider biting.

This from a huge Stargate TV fan.

I'm finding just about all Blu-ray TV releases to be way overpriced. The only one that isn't crazy is Weeds.

And Mad Men. Lionsgate has a policy of only charging $1 more for SRP on blu-ray releases.

I only have Weeds, Mad Men, and Pushing Daisies so far. I'm not picking up Lost until the complete boxed set, and I'm waiting on BSG for a condensed (and hopefully more cost friendly) complete set. Otherwise, I'm not picking up any series that has blu-ray mid-run. I'll wait for the back seasons or a complete set.

Agreed, the price is cheap but you also have to keep in mind that Weeds seasons are pretty short (a dozen episodes per season) whereas some other series have 23-25 episodes per season. Still cheap, but I just wanted to put it into perspective.

I also agree that Stargate Universe on Blu-ray is too expensive. I really wonder why Stargate fans are getting shafted on Blu-ray:
- no SG1 on blu
- only first and last episode of Atlantis on blu (with average video quality), even though all full seasons were originally planned
- and now we get SGU but at an expensive price.

I'll buy SGU on blu, but only when the price drops to a reasonable level. It doesn't need to be Weeds-cheap but I'm not paying more for SGU per episode than what I pay for let's say LOST.

Because probably someone high on up tought that these fans would be ready to pay whatever price to get their Stargate on BD, so let's jack up the prices and make money. That is a strategy that can back fire on you very badly. Fans yes are willing to pay for the stuff they love but it's also not a good idea to make them mad, afterall you are only as rich as the fans are willing to make you.

No SG1 on blu:
The first 5 seasons were not prepared with HD in mind. The 6th season is the first that might be able to benefit from a blu-ray upgrade without going back to scratch on special effects, etc. This is a huge cost factor, and it's not clear that sales would balance the cost.

No SGA on blu:
Atlantis apparently didn't sell well on DVD - an effect of being sort of an also ran series, I'm sure. When Atlantis wasn't outright ripping off SG-1 stories, it wasn't really creating a great new mythology. That said, there are probably some like me who didn't pick up the series because they're waiting on blu-ray.

As far as I'm concerned, the best way to encourage blu-ray releases for the prior series is to buy the blu-ray direct to video productions from both. Hopefully the 2 new DTV movies will get back on track sooner than later.

I agree on all accounts with you.

Just to be clear: I'm not disappointed about SG1 not making it to blu-ray. Sure, I'd love to have it on blu but I knew that the reasons for not releasing it is that the source material would require too costly a process to make it HD-worthy. I did buy Continuum and Ark of Truth on Blu-ray on release date and was very happy with them. I read on insider blogs that MGM was actually quite happy with the sales of those direct-to-video movies.

Atlantis is another bag of beans. Fans were somewhat promised they'd get the entire series on blu by MGM and then they pulled their tails in. When I started collecting Blu's, Atlantis was actually the first series I wanted to buy on blu (heck, it was one of the first announced to be released on blu). No doubt many a fan held off on purchasing the DVD's because the Blu-rays were announced ... and now nothing I also won't go back and buy the DVD's since the HD broadcast recordings I have look better than the DVD's.

SGU: here's a good chance for MGM to please the fans as well as make some money and they bury the whole thing from the get-go by asking a high price

I don't know but to me it sounds like MGM just keeps shooting themselves in the foot and are incoherent in their strategy: when you're selling a show on DVD and at the same time announce it'll be released on blu-ray, only to state 2-3 years later you won't release the whole series on blu-ray, then you're just hurting yourself and angering fans who have been holding off buying the DVD's and waiting patiently for the blu-rays.

Stargate is such a beautiful Sci-fi franchise yet it feels like the higher-ups don't know how to correctly market it.

Stargate Universe: Season One Blu-ray
SG-U 1.0

I have not seen any of SG-U, at the Amazon pre-order price of $39 now, is it worth it? Is it really only 9 episodes???

You need to shop around. Amazon US has it for $38.99 which is the lowest price I've seen.

After loving the movie, couldn't get into SG1 and never watched it, loved Atlantis and loved Universe, I finally picked up Atlantis on Blu-ray a while ago, and just started re-watching it for the first time. After I finish the Atlantis re-watch, Universe will be next on the re-watch... and boy does it suck to know that at the end of this glorious scifi Blu-ray experience, the last season of Stargate, Stargate Universe Season 2, is only on DVD

I guess it's on iTunes in HD, but I sure don't want to pay a ridiculous price (in Canada) for crappy iTunes quality.

This really needs to be on Blu-ray. I mean, hello, seaQuest is on Blu-ray! What do we have to do to get this released?! I'm still holding out hope that an international release will happen.

Give SG1 another try. It's great.

And where is Sea Quest on blu-ray?

Season 1 was released in Australia, and then all 3 seasons were released in Germany.
