Question PS3 + 720p

I know this topic has been beaten to death but I would just like some clarification.

I want to buy a PS3, I have a 50" Samsung plasma (720p native with 1080i capabilities)

...Has the 720p problems been fixed with the PS3 or no? If so, is it just a firmware update or are they releasing new PS3's or "second-gens" that already have the problem worked out?

Again, sorry for bringing this up once more.

been fixed for a long time now.

720p plays fine movies and games.

Just do a firmware update regardless. It brings everything up to date.
The 720p problem was before the summer 07.

You should be fine. The problem still exists for people that have TV's that can only do 1080i. Mostly CRT Projos. Just set the PS3 for 720p and it will work fine.

I could've sworn when I had my 720p/1080i TV a few months ago that Blu-Ray wouldn't output in 720p and would downconvert to 480p automatically unless I deselected 720p and made it do 1080i. Sorry that sounds confusing but I don't know how else to explain it.

Or maybe they fixed it, but this was very recent.

If you are planning on playing games or using the media functions, its great. If you just plan on BD's, the BD30 is a better choice. 720p output to a 720p is sharper. Ive owned both.

personally at the moment i own a xbox 360 and im very happy with it, so if i just wanted to watch BR i should get a stand alone?

btw, my TV is 720p but i may want to buy a 1080p in the future, so should i buy a 1080p blu ray player and save myself from buying another? in other words, would the 1080p still look and perform good on my 720 at the moment?

all bluray players can play in 1080p.

...as well as 720p, so you can get a bluray player now with no worries.

Youll be very happy with 720p BD's.

If you dont NEED the ps3, buy the BD30 or 1400 and then youll have great players for 720p and 1080p.

ps3 will output all of those.

sony fixed the scaling problem so that if you select only 720p output, then the ps3 will scale the 1080p BD (I believe they are all encoded 1080p) to 720p for you.

was it fixed with a firmware update or just fixed with new ps3 models?

in other words, if i went out and bought a ps3 today, would i need a firmware update to receive these output capabilities or would it be fixed already with no update needed?

it was fixed with a firmware update months and months ago...

either way, you will have to update firmware on the PS3 anyways. (but its easy)

do you need to have the ps3 connected to the internet to receive the firmware, or is it easier than that?
