My dumb question, which I don't even know whether or not it belongs in this section, is.......
How long will Blu-Ray last as the highest definition disc? I mean, are we all wasting our money here when something better could be developed in 5-10 years, maybe even a Blu2? I'm just curious with how well this compares to gaming consoles. |

LoL most people are just happy right now to have a 'color tv'. You go to people's house and that's the sticker it will have on the front of their tv. Most people dont even know what blu-ray is yet...so it will take years for blu-ray to settle into everyone's homes and you are already talking about the NEXT technology?
![]() Why not just wait for a Blu-10 then? And PS-final edition? ![]() ![]() |

no one knows, and how is it wasting money? will you not watch movies until the next format? and what then? maybe there will be something after that as well? so can't waste money on that either.
There will always be something better down the road. So that means never buying or renting or watching anything. Taking that attitude you should also not eat because it is wasting money since you will be hungry later. |

I LOVE Blu-Ray BUT....
I am holding off on replacing my DVD collection. Here is why: The wave of the future is going to be HD video streaming from an internet connection, directly to your TV. Not Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is great for film buffs, collectors, and will have a lifespan of a few years or so...maybe 10. But...Netflix already has a setup box that is HD ready, and allows members to instantly stream DVD quality video directly to your TV. Imagine watching any movie you want, at any time, without having to buy or rent a disc. Right now, Blu-Ray is the highest quality. But, if you want to have an unlimited movie library, all in High-Definition, just wait and see. We're not that far off! |

Sure, I think there would be another format in another 10-15 years. But isn't there a point you reach where the video and audio cannot be any better? If lossless is almost identical to the original, can even the trained ear notice anything better?
To me, Blu-ray is the ultimate home theater experience using an HDTV, HD receiver, 8 speakers, and a BD player. In my imagination, the next movie experience would be virtual. You and your family or whoever is watching the movie with you would actually be IN the movie. Until people have a Matrix-like system in their homes, I think Blu-ray is it. I don't think internet streaming is going to replace blu-ray anytime soon, at least not for anyone who has seen what blu-ray is capable of. I don't see 1080p with lossless audio flying over the current setups that most people have for internet--I just think the necessary bandwith would be outrageous. I mean cable and dish are only using 720P right now and have no plans on uping that because of---you guessed it, bandwith. I think those who doubt the power of blu-ray are going to be surprised by how many new adopters there will be this Christmas season. I think a lot of people are finally upgrading their televisions this season and I guess many are bringing home cheap blu-ray players or playstations to get the most out of those televisions. And I wouldn't be surprised if blu-ray software climbs past 25% maybe 30% of home video sales in the first quarter of next year. People who have seen this Turbo HD on demand from dish (that claims to be blu-ray quality) are saying that it still has the same blocky pixelation problems that standard cable HD has because they have to compress the heck out of the signal. So I'm going to ignore the folks who see streaming video as the future and probably going to replace a good portion of my DVD collection when good quality blu-rays are available.

Until internet providers are willing to dish out multiple billions of dollars to COMPLETELY OVERHAUL their physical infrastructures for providing service (and how likely is that? seriously?), the streaming content will always be limited to MAYBE 70% of what Blu-ray can offer IN AN INSTANT AND REPEATEDLY AT THE ARMS LENGTH. Streaming true 1080p video and lossless audio at the same time is probably not possible at this time, or would cost way too much for a standard home owner to even consider. The closest available right now would be a streaming service for 720p with Dolby Digital audio and would require home owners to be paying in excess of $150/month for internet service. And even that would probably suffer from lag and pausing hiccups. |

Lol ![]() What is even better? Click on the "looking for official site" link at the top of the page and you see "UniversalHiDef.com" – online portal for Universal’s HD DVD movies when you click on the link that is Universal's Blu-ray site But anyway, like a lot of others on here, I prefer to have the disc & case. I have used the streaming Netflix service with my Xbox 360 and honestly it is good for nothing else but HD TV shows at most. The movie selection is poor. Even when watching an episode it Buffered now and then. Which is quite annoying. Also like someone said earlier, you don't get lossless audio by streaming it through services like Netflix or watching something on cable. The picture looks horrid while trying to watch an 'HD' movie on HBO or whatnot. Then they don't even have Dolby Digital to go along with the crap picture. its stereo?! Blu-ray is way better than streaming movies. Last edited by Siri; 12-22-2008 at 01:46 AM. |

It will be a long time before some thing else comes a long. As for technology progesses TV's would have to have a higher resolution than 1080p. Most of these people on this site (me included) would not download movies if there life depended on it.
The only thing I could maybe see is Blu Ray animorpically enhancing 2:35:1 or 2:40:1 films and TV's coming out in 2:40:1 aspect ration so we can get these black bar, every movie should be shot in 1:85:1 people, to "Shut the hell up!" |

+1 What can be better than blu-ray? How much more clearer can it get for pq and aq? In 10-15 years, we'll be saying the same stuff about blu-ray like how we do with dvd and hd dvd.
