Hi guys,
I thought to come here and tell you about my blue-ray playback problems. ![]() I am a PC user and I watch blue-ray movies via PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra. I just bought Wall-e on blue-ray and found it playing very oddly on different OS's. For some reason the playback is jerking (looks like frames are freezing/skipping) when using PowerDVD on Vista 64 bit SP1. However, on XP Pro 32 bit SP3 the playback is normal without any jerking (although the usual "juddering" in panning shots is always there but that is not the problem). Later, I have found this jerking also with other BD movies like "The forbidden kingdom" and "Fantastic4 Rise of the Silver Surfer" (the older Fantastic4 worked normally before on my Vista) and it looks like something has messed up my playback on Vista 64 bit SP1. I could almost bet that this relates to copy protections and a buggy software patch or driver which don't work together, again. I have patched my PowerDVD to the latest version 7.3.4617.0 and I am using the latest drivers for my Geforce 8800 GTX (180.48) on both OS's (I have both OS's on the same computer). And it was after this patching and driver update when the jerking showed up on Vista. What do you think? Could it be the PowerDVD or graphics card driver? I've checked Task Manager and I don't see any resource hogs. And I want to stress that this is the first time I see a blue-ray problem called "Jerking" on my Vista. At the moment I am in contact with Cyberlink support waiting for their answer but I would be glad to find a solution also from here, as these cases tend to be difficult sometimes. ![]() Thanks |

Well, after many support tickets Cyberlink confirmed to me that it is a bug in their software (PowerDVD Ultra). This bug occurs only when playing B region blu-ray movies on 64-bit Vista while 32-bit XP Pro SP3 plays the same B region movies fine. All region movies play fine on both OS's. So far, Cyberlink hasn't released the bug fix yet.
After using blu-ray technology now over a year on my PC I have to say this technology is still, unfortunately, immature. And it is frustrating that consumers have to struggle with these bugs and waste their time by playing a software engineer. I just bought a new blu-ray title "Get Smart" which played otherwise well, except that the picture was out of sync and flickering with some extras. No, I don't have time to send another support ticket to Cyberlink. |

![]() you are using quite an old version of powerdvd OP, ya cant blame that for the whole blu-ray thing being "immature". i bought a ps3 in july 07 and used that for blu-rays without a hitch for almost a year and a half, sold my ps3 around christmas and am now using my computer has a HTPC and have yet to find ONE title that doesnt play correctly on my systems. upgrading to the newer version of powerdvd (8 ultra) or Total Media Theatre(i use this one) and you probably wont have anymore issues. im even running 5.1 Lossless LPCM->HDMI from my computer now! |
