I am the only one that thinks movie ticket prices are absolutely RIDICULOUS? I have basically stopped going to movies, except for 1 or 2 summer blockbusters. There was a time when I would go a few times a month, but the cost is just outrageous. I enjoy the experience of going to the movies and I remember how much fun my mom and I had going to movies when I was younger. I was hoping to share the same experiences with my son, but maybe not. Its not that I can't afford it, I just think the industry takes advantage of the consumer. I know it's really not fair to say that when you have $100+ million dollars made and they have to recoup that money plus their profits, but considering TDK made $1Billion dollars at theaters plus DVD/BLU sales, I think its safe to say a profit was made... I just read that theater prices are going up again. Anyway, just my .02

The prices have gotten a little out of hand, especially if you were to attempt to combine the cost of a movie ticket with anything from the concession stands.
Here in jax, a ticket for the Imax is $14 and a regular ticket is about $9-10 depending on where you are and if you can get a discount.
The local AMC though has a thing where if you go mon-thurs tickets are only $5. For regular showings. Imax is $9.
Macruz and I don't go to the movies as often as we used to, it is pretty much only if we think it is a movie that will be awesome on the big screen or if it is something that one of us is just dying to see.

I would actually be fine with higher prices.

Make the trip to the theater an experience. Give me great food, give me a bar, comfy seating, great picture, great sound. Make it worth leaving the house. Make it expensive enough that packs of teenagers would never hang out there just for something to do, and expensive enough that parents would never use it as a two-hour babysitter.

I know there are theaters out there that do this, but none in my area. Our cinema looks and smells bad, and isn't worth going to any more.

Seems like it would be worth the price of admission then for you and your son

The Dark Knight is just one movie......... Theaters carry a lot of expense to keep showings during matinee times and other off-peak times, and not everything does as well as The Dark Knight, and I'm sure the cost to obtain the films is high etc........

You're talking about a large building that really only does significant business during the weekend and during big releases....... The Theaters also basically live and die by the "Big Summer Blockbusters"

I think ticket prices are fair..... it's an 'event' If you were a guy going to pretty much everything that hit the theater by yourself the cost would certainly be pretty daunting, but if you are talking about taking your kid to a movie occasionally, I think the price is pretty good for the "experience"

Just make it a special event.....

Either that, or baseball season is right around the corner...... 4 hours for a $10 ticket in the cheap seats

Pretty much everything is over priced now a days. We are in the age of CEO/presidents/high management squeezing every $0.01 out of customers for their products. Check for example sports. Look at the insane prices you have to pay to see a baseball game or an NFL game. If you think you get the same product for the money you pay, I suggest you check ESPN Classic and watch sports played 25-30 years ago, when they made a lot less money and gave you a lot more sweat and care then these so call divas now do.

Keep raising prices.... it just further justifies me buying Blus instead of going to the theater.

I think that's about where I am now. I can pay $20+ just for my wife and I, over $30 if we get snacks. Or I can wait 3 months pay roughly $20 and get the Blu, plus maybe get a digital copy I can sell for $5. And be in the comfort of my own home. And don't get me started on 3D!!!! $3 extra dollars for glasses that you have to return

Oddly, where I live, we have a dollar theater and two drive in theaters. And one of the drive in theaters just added a second screen last year.

Anytime we go to the movies, we go to the first two shows during the day, here in PA you pay 6.50 per person and we usually don't get anything from the concession stands..way too much money for a coke and small popcorn.

It is because people have not reduced their viewing habits even in the wake of widespread economic chaos. As a result, the theaters know they have yur ballz and will continue to hand them to you.

Gosh, I love my home theater.

The regular first run theater in town charges $4.50 for the first showing of the day. They call it the "Early Bird Showing". Then at the concession stand, you can get a bucket of popcorn and a large soda for $10. The bucket has a free refill on it, but oddly the soda doesn't. And it was brought up in another thread that they would be upping prices for 3D movies, they didn't at our theater. 3D is the price of the ticket with an additional $2.25. So, when I went to see Avatar 3D, I paid $4.50 + $2.25 = $6.75. When we went to see Alice in Wonderland 3D, it was before the regular prices kicked in and it was $5.50 for the matinee + $2.25 = $7.75. Regular price is $8 after the matinee is over.

Try a regular price of $19.50. Prices are going up, as of today.
