Default why is sony releasing BDP-S500 before 1.1 profile?

it doesn't make sense unless it has secret video processing power we dont know about... ?

Thumbs down

It's just an S300. Ignore this product and move on. Waste of money.

thats a silly thing to say

the new sony blu-ray will play recorded blu-ray disc
Step up to the BDP-S500 Blu-ray Disc™ player, featuring Full HD 1080p video plus Dolby® TrueHD and DTS® HD audio decoding. so new s500 is a great buy

While the old s300 doesn't support it

If the advanced audio features is true, then I'll take back some of my comments. My initial review of this product was nothing more than a heavier chassis. Which was a big "who cares" for me.

But the OP still has a point. This is frankly a dumb product from Sony when a 1.1 player would be looked at much more favorably. IMHO.

Default Looks cool

It's pretty nice looking player, but bulkier than the S300. The S300 isn't the best thing out there but I'm not replacing mine till the format war is won, and hopefully Blu players cost a bit less. I also got a PS3 yesterday, so I guess I really have 2 BD players.

Yeah the S500 is a slick looking piece of hardware.
Congrats on your new PS3 You really only have one BR player though.
Toshiba says your PS3 does not exist.

I am more than happy with my S300. The firmware I updated makes me confident of its capability for the future.

The other big question is why they would release a player that cannot bitstream DTS HD MA. Which in my mind for the cost is just crazy to do.

I think we should wait a little bit longer before making the final vertict. The profile 1.1/2.0 compliant version of the SoC that Sony has used before has been available for some time now. And the Blu-ray recoders that Sony will release in Japan on Nov 1st will be profile 1.1 compliant, so they have the firmware (more or less) ready.

Maybe the just want to test the final version of the first PiP title before releasing the firmware, and they were not able to do that in time for the release in the US. To me it seems more feasable to do a last minute update of the firmware for the Japanese models than the US models.
