Hmmmm.....choices, choices.

I'd go with the 80GB PS3, but that's only because I dont own one yet (I use a standalone player).

However, in your case that S500 may be tempting.

What's the big difference between the 300 and 500?

The PS3 is the fastest player out there right now. AFAIK, the only things that BDP-S500 have are IR remote support, and I believe it passes the newer HD audio formats via HDMI to a capable receiver.

I do have Onkyo 605 Receiver that can do Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding.

Actually the 605 can do MA decoding. And right now neither one of these players will do MA. Both might be able to with a FW update. You need to ask yourself do you want a standalone or not? Once you answer that then the choice is easy.

I would say most likely and if they do a FW update so it can bitstream MA then yes. The PS3 is due for a MA update but there is no confirmation it is going to come. I think you are doing ok either way. How long ago did you get the 300 and what did you pay for it? I know it is $499 now but if you paid more than that I would talk with sony so you get full value for what you paid. Not what they are charging now.

Ok I could not remember if that one had come down in price or not. Too many players to keep track of. Since you have been around the site for awhile I am guess you know both the up and down sides to the PS3. Even if some seem to think there are no downs to it at all. The 500 is almost the same player as you have with some minor improvements.

Would you pay the extra $100 for the minor improvements? + s500 is only profile 1.0

Since it does not have MA it makes it a tough choice. What is so sad is that is has the Sigma 8634 chip with HDMI 1.3 but still does not do the MA. It is capable of doing it with a FW update question is will they. That is the same place the PS3 is that is can do it but will it. I have heard that they are negotating with DTS about MA for the PS3. Could it be that they are doing it for the whole line? we just donot know.

I prefrer standalones myself and most of the drawbacks from the PS3 could be solved it they killed the bluetooth on the remote. That is my opinion. The PS3 is future proof for the most part. Since I prefer the standalones I probally would pay the extra. But you have to consider I am hoping to get my pioneer 95 next week and will also probally by a PS3 to have as a second Blu-ray player also.

OMG, the PS3 all the way, no question!! Buy the 40 gb version and save $$. The PS3 is the fastest, most compatible BR player out there. It is also a wifi internet box, game machine, plays sacds etc.. You get sooooo much more for your money on top of a much better BR player. How can you choose to buy anything else?? Once sony updates it to output dts-hd ma audio, it will be a perfect 10.

Could not disagree more with it being a perfect 10. It will decode the audio and send it LPCM. I want my receiver to decode it not my blu player. Once again that is a personal preference and not something shared by everyone.
And decdoing it in the player is only good if you have analog outs which we know it does not.

PS3! The firmware scalability is, arguably, unbeatable in the mid-to-long term!
