Default Should I buy a Blu-ray player with a 720p tv?

Sorry kind of new to this, but I was wondering if I buy a blu-ray player will the picture look good on a tv that only displays up to 720p? I also have a Hitachi director series 65" that displays only to 1080i. Will this even work? Thanks for any info.

You can output the resolution you want.. from 480i to 1080p. You can use Component and HDMI , most BLuray player even have Svideo and Composite (Yellow) output.. (480i)...

I had a 720p + Blu-ray combo for more than a year and it looked better than DVD easily..

I have one of those older 1080i sets and the reference quality Blurays look outstanding! I am not in a rush to get a 1080p set at this time. I'll just wait until i see a deal i cannot pass up...that's the only way i am getting one of those.

I actually like the Hitachi except for the fact that is takes up a large chunk of property in my livingroom . I have the philips 37" ambilight set on the wall in my bedroom and was thinking of installing a Yamaha YSP-800 sound bar and woofer to it, as the sound is pretty poor from the set.

Yes. It still looks great and you will be future proof. Buy your blu-ray now and you wont have to spend the extra couple of hundred when you decide to upgrade your tv.

PS3 is your best buy. It would be about 370 if you sold the remote controller and bought the BD one instead. Or if you like to play games get the PS3 or if you like to watch movies store thing etc.

I agree. Blu looked great on my 1080i Sony projection but it looks even better on my Panasonic plasmas.

I don't have a 1080p TV, but mine is 768p (which is what someone told me) and I see a HUGE difference between upscalled DVD and Blu-Ray - and my screen is 32" - a lot of people said I wouldn't see a huge difference since my screen isn't over 40" but I see it - and I am so happy I switched to Blu-Ray! I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I would come up with a few extra bucks and go for the 1080p.

Just like I've been told that 1080p on a 37" screen that I sit 10 feet away from is a useless feature, yet switching between 1080i and 1080p output on BD player *does* make a slight but noticeable difference--even moreso when I stand four feet away from the screen.

Maybe it's because the Westinghouse model I have is really just a monitor with a very poor scaler inside (its display of analog sources is absolutely atrocious), but the 1080p IS sharper and better with motion than a 1080i BD source.

Kind of flies in the face of conventional thought, which would hold that I could barely tell a difference between good upconversion and BD at that viewing distance (cough cough Enderle cough cough)

Back on-topic: Yes, Blu-ray makes a BIG difference. And this means a lot coming from a guy who has no choice but to sit too far away from his HDTV but still notices a huge difference between DVD and BD. I can tell BD even blows OTA HD away (eww, compression artifacts!!)

A 720p will definitely show results, though even more stunning than Blu is things like Leno, golf, etc. You'll definitely get your money's worth over DVD. I don't got the budget for a 40"+ 1080p TV myself, but I get everything I need out of my trusty 720.

That was the same thing - when I first got into Blu-ray, I only enjoyed it on a 32" Vizio at 720p. Still an INCREDIBLE difference from DVD. Mind-blowing when I first saw Casino Royale and Troy, I was going insane here.

I would not waste money on 720p, my GF use to have a Panny 32" 720p and I helped her to upgrade to a JVC 37" 1080p, man it looks better! 720p is good for gaming since most 360 and PS3 games does 720p native but if you watch a lot of movies, 1080p is the way to go....
