if i have the samsung bd-p1000 (Blu-ray player) and the toshiba HD-A2 (HD DVD player) and i have M:I:III on both formats, blu-ray and hd dvd, the mission impossible 3 for the blu-ray should look better since the blu-ray player has better picture quality right? what do u guys think

Whichever is cheaper really, if there is no difference, then go Blu-ray
![]() MI3 PQ is very well debated, with some (purist) review sites saying the BD was sharper, and others the newer ones (less purist) say they did not like the grain and the HD DVD had a cleaner look with more 3D pop (whatever that is!), so it depends on whether you like film grain. If you already have it, don't bother, but for Departed, I would get the BD for the uncompressed PCM track, TrueHD is a bit of a Microsoft hack job on HD DVD atm so there is something wrong and they need to fix it as the PCM tracks have always sounded and rated better.

Frankly, they will probably look the same, overly soft like all other WB titles, I doubt the 1080p/i thing will make a difference with your TV as it a good brand and will de-interlace properly to 1080p from the HD DVD. The only reason to want the BD over the HD DVD is for the uncompressed sound. Unless you wan a Combo, but personally I hate those, as I would never use the DVD side anyway.

Personally I dislike my Toshiba player sufficiently that I wouldn't get Warner titles in HD DVD - even if the BD has no lossless. BD all the way!
![]() For the case of The Departed, BD for sure with the lossless audio. The image transfer and encode should be identical. Paramount does a different encode for BD so theirs can differ in image quality between the formats. |
