Default Setting up Yamaha 663

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have done a search, but at this point it is all "greek" to me.....

Have a sony 52xbr4
Sony BD 550 (just bought today)
Yamaha 663 (just bought today)

Have the BD 550 connected to the yamaha with HDMI
Have the Yamaha connected to the Sony xbr4 with HDMI

The reciever when in tuner mode, sends sound to all 6 speakers (6.1)
When Bluray is playing, I get picture, and sound to all speakers

When viewing TV (over the air antenna, hd only...no cable hooked up), I get only picture and no sound.

Can not get the on screen display of yamaha status.......and settings.

Have spent hours reviewing manual.....obviously not doing something right.....

Can someone please help this person (me), who certainly doesnt know what he is doing.....

Thanks.

You need to run an audio cable from your tvs audio output in the back and run it to your receiver then set up an input for it on your receiver.

You won't get the OSD unless you're on an input that uses HDMI.

you'd have to connect something to the receiver from the tv to the receiver for it to receive sound...over a tosslink or analog out...then selct that in the receiver (analog, or spdif)...

edit...too late

You can also check out the AVS forums Section. I received allot of help for the older version of your Amp.

The Yamaha RX-V663 thread. HDMI 1.3 upconversion, TrueHD, DTS MA decoding Thread.

I appreciate all the quick responses. I have connected an optical cable from the TV to the 663, and now have sound with the OTA signal. I was under the false impression that HDMI was a 2-way signal. Shows what I know.....ha ha.

Anyway, now I go to my xbr4's menu.....select BD, and then took the yamaha remote, selected amp, and menu......and got the on screen display for the 663. Hopefully I am on the right track.

Maybe there is hope for me yet.....

In summary,

I have BD 550 connected with HDMI to 663
663 connected to xbr4 with HDMI
XBR4 connected to 663 with optical cable.

Now, I need to study on setting up speakers, tweaking , and whatever other problems I can create...or better yet avoid......

Thanks again for the help.

You've got everything wired correctly for now. Just keep in mind that you can't use the Yamaha's on-screen menu when you're watching broadcast TV.

The next step for you in the setup is to let the Yamaha's auto setup program run. It's called YPAO, and it uses the small microphone that came with your 663. Definitely read the instructions and run it, because it will diagnose any problems and set your speaker levels correctly. It's accessible from the setup menu using the on-screen display.

You've picked up a great receiver, and it should work nicely for you.

Another question....

Everything is set up.....speakers test and tweaking using auto feature all ok.......now,......

I have a 6.1 set up.....

I selected MIX on Sony 550 (which I think means the player is decoding)
I went into the manual setup on the 663, selected extended surround, EX/ES

Played a 5.1 True HD, got a PCM + extended surround ex/ex display, and my
6th speaker was working.

Played a 5.1 DTSMA, got a PCM + extended surround ex/ex display, and my
6th speaker was also working.

I guess my question, is , am I missing something.......should be getting the sixth speaker with PCM and ex/es with DTS?

Also, tested both using DIRECT on sony 550, and could not matrix sixth speaker, which supports what I have read that the 663 can not decode and matrix.

That is the reason I purchased the 550, so that it would decode, and I could matrix with the 663.

Am I on the right track....?

I am all ears...

Thanks

Bitstream the lossless audio formats to the V663. Then your problems are solved. Why even bother to have the player do the decoding when the V663 can do it and probably better too?

Decoding (unpackaging) of 1's and 0's will be identical no matter if its in Player or Receiver.

Bit for Bit.

Yes, agreed. But I think instead of better it's the preferred way. The receiver displays which audio codec is being decoded. It's easier to setup the player to bitstream than decode. When the player decodes there are more options to wade through. And, since PCM is displayed on the receiver when the player does the decoding, you can't be so sure that the player was setup correctly other than getting PCM and the number of channels input. The receiver does everything for you when you bitstream. It's much simpler way to go and more convenient.

I guess that's your personal preference...cuz the OP says:

The 663 cannot matrix a native TrueHD or Dts-HD MA signal...but it can matrix a PCM signal, which is what he is trying to accomplish.

Default 663 setup......update

I am still learning......

I have found that while setting the sony 550 up to decode, (mix), and matrix through the 663.......I am indeed getting six speaker sound, the display on the yamaha shows PCM, and Extend Surround, dolby ex......or something to that effect. On the display on the TV, it shows 3/2 DTS.....or 3/2 Dolby Digital, based on whatever I am playing.

Now....if I set the player to Bit stream (direct).....the 663 will not matrix (known factor), will play only 5 speakers...and of course the 663's dispay shows DTS MA or True HD. And..........on the TV display......it is showing....DTS Master Audio....or Dolby True HD.....

Now I am wondering that when I decode in the player and matrix.....if I am killing the True HD or the DTS MA......

I am spending a good part of the last few days experimenting......wife is not happy. I really need to put this to bed.....

Any suggestions?

by matrixing you are not "killing" the audio, you are merely changing the surround field.

If you want audio to play through every speaker, matrix the PCM.

If you just want the audio as it is, Bitstream.

Nope, I don't matrix 5.1 tracks even though I have a 7.1 system. I want to hear the movie the way the sound mix intended it to be heard. Oh well, to each his own I guess. Thanks for your comments though. As usual, you are right on the money.
