Firmware updates should not take anymore then 15 minutes on a fast Internet connection. If the player has been locked up for several hours you will need to power cycle it. It is true that some brands and models of products that loose power during an update during flashing will need factory serviced unless they have the ability to store a backup firmware image.
Manufactories should make BLU-RAY players that automatically install updates around 3AM or another time set by the user. It would be ideal to have the BLU-RAY player automatically turn on once a week or once a month in the middle of the night and download the latest updates when the player is not being used. You should wait until the BLU-RAY player finishes the firmware update. If it is stuck in that mode for several hours then something went wrong and the power plug to the player needs pulled for 10 seconds and plugged back in. If the power button does not respond power plug will reset the player. Doing that could destroy the player during an update unless it has a backup firmware image to restore. If the player is stuck in download then the website for the firmware updates might have went down and power cycling will not be a problem. If it finished downloading the update and was trying to install it, then something might have went wrong and it locked up. You might be forced to pull the power plug if its been several hours. Pulling the power plug should never be done during a firmware update unless it has been several hours and the player locked up. The player might recover after power cycling it.

On Verizon FIOS the Sony BDP-S350 takes less then 10 minutes. If you have a LCD screen burn in is not a issue. If it is a plasma you could turn the power off to the TV. Turning the power off to the TV will have no effect on the player power.

I had the same problem bd1500, easier to download on a disc and insert, took less than 2 minutes, blu's were playing through only to the set-up, would not go any further, problem solved.

At two hours I would unplug the player power cord and plug it back in. No firmware update should take more then 30 minutes with the slowest broadband connection. If the player locked up during the flashing of the firmware it might need serviced and power cycling might not fix the problem. Now it is possible that some brands and models of BLU-RAY players have a backup firmware image in case something goes wrong during a firmware update. After power cycling the player if the new firmware is not installed you will need to do the update again. Sorry this happen to you. I have done several firmware updates with LAN connections on several players and never had a problem. Around 10 minutes over LAN is the normal update time. I just click on update, walk away and then come back in 10 minutes and start watching the movie.

You can call Samsung to see if they can help. If you unplug the player during a firmware update it will mess up the player if that player does not have some type of back up firmware to restore from. The player might already be messed up since it sounds like it locked up already during a firmware update. At some point after several hours you will need to power cycle it since something is wrong. The player would have to lock up during a flash of the firmware and have no back up image for it to turn into a non working player.

When you do power cycle it after several hours and if the player does work, if the old firmware is installed then the player will need to be updated again. If it locks up again then there might be a problem with the firmware version or player. The worse time for a player to lock up is during a firmware update.
