Firmware updates should not take anymore then 15 minutes on a fast Internet connection. If the player has been locked up for several hours you will need to power cycle it. It is true that some brands and models of products that loose power during an update during flashing will need factory serviced unless they have the ability to store a backup firmware image.

Manufactories should make BLU-RAY players that automatically install updates around 3AM or another time set by the user. It would be ideal to have the BLU-RAY player automatically turn on once a week or once a month in the middle of the night and download the latest updates when the player is not being used.

When I went on line with my PS3 the downloads took forever and ever! I was just as pissed as you (I think) The wonders of the tech world What you could do is head to your local bar as fast as you can and drink, continue for an hour then slink back home and see if the download has been completed. Good Luck !

You should wait until the BLU-RAY player finishes the firmware update. If it is stuck in that mode for several hours then something went wrong and the power plug to the player needs pulled for 10 seconds and plugged back in. If the power button does not respond power plug will reset the player. Doing that could destroy the player during an update unless it has a backup firmware image to restore. If the player is stuck in download then the website for the firmware updates might have went down and power cycling will not be a problem. If it finished downloading the update and was trying to install it, then something might have went wrong and it locked up. You might be forced to pull the power plug if its been several hours. Pulling the power plug should never be done during a firmware update unless it has been several hours and the player locked up. The player might recover after power cycling it.

On Verizon FIOS the Sony BDP-S350 takes less then 10 minutes. If you have a LCD screen burn in is not a issue. If it is a plasma you could turn the power off to the TV. Turning the power off to the TV will have no effect on the player power.

Yes, I have. It was a PS3 game that I had for a year and there were a ton of updates done at the same time. I was worried like you, however, it turned out ok. I'm on your side, I don't want to see any damage to your TV or player. Sometimes it just helps to step away from a situation and you can get a better angle on the situation.

At two hours I would unplug the player power cord and plug it back in. No firmware update should take more then 30 minutes with the slowest broadband connection. If the player locked up during the flashing of the firmware it might need serviced and power cycling might not fix the problem. Now it is possible that some brands and models of BLU-RAY players have a backup firmware image in case something goes wrong during a firmware update. After power cycling the player if the new firmware is not installed you will need to do the update again. Sorry this happen to you. I have done several firmware updates with LAN connections on several players and never had a problem. Around 10 minutes over LAN is the normal update time. I just click on update, walk away and then come back in 10 minutes and start watching the movie.

You can call Samsung to see if they can help. If you unplug the player during a firmware update it will mess up the player if that player does not have some type of back up firmware to restore from. The player might already be messed up since it sounds like it locked up already during a firmware update. At some point after several hours you will need to power cycle it since something is wrong. The player would have to lock up during a flash of the firmware and have no back up image for it to turn into a non working player.

No,this player was playing fine until I wanted to watch a FOX Blu(QOS) which required a upgrade,I go a and do it and this is what happens to me,damn thing must be stuck,If I got a screwed up player from Samsung they better replace it and pay for the return shipping,I've had lots of Samsung prooducts in the past and they all have been quality items! Like Paul Sr, says "I'm getting aggrivated"! The little display on the BD player itself says "NET-UP",what ever that means?

What I was trying to say is if the player locks up during a download and you power cycle it the player will be fine. If the player for some reason locks up and freezes during a flash of the firmware install the player would need to be serviced by Samsung unless they designed a backup firmware image that can be restored during the power cycle.
When you do power cycle it after several hours and if the player does work, if the old firmware is installed then the player will need to be updated again. If it locks up again then there might be a problem with the firmware version or player. The worse time for a player to lock up is during a firmware update.
