The first two truly define "Star Wars" for me.

In terms of story, yeah I can see that. They are not original or unique in that respect and the basic story had been told better elsewhere. But in terms of the bigger picture, they are not overrated since they really did change how movies were looked at. Movie marketing is the best example - we now have toys coming out months before a movie is released because of Star Wars. Before, you hoped the movie was successful enough to get the extras like toys. The movies themselves are entertaining but I have never considered them my favorite movies or the best ever made and I think it is funny whenever anyone cals them that but they did change the movie industry more than probably any other film.

1. Phantom Menace is.
2. Return of the Jedi is.

The Phantom Menace, at the very least, looks like a film. The other two are a visual mess and a horrible result of early experimentation with high-def video.

1. NO. They have a certain charm to them, but they are not great films.
2. NO. It's influence on the filmmaking world is too great.
3. I hope so! It's odd that they are the basically only film series where the original versions aren't available in addition to alternate cuts.
4. The order in which they were released. 4,5,6,1,2,3. It is interesting to see how the story works if you watch them 1-6, but if you've never seen them AT ALL, then you must see them in the order they were originally shown.
5. I think a true fanboy can love both, but they are kidding themselves if they think 1-3 are better than 4-6 (or they were young when they were released and are bias toward them since they grew up with them.)

Empire is the only great movie in the series.

The original is pretty good, not great, but changed movies forever thanks to its effects and spin on the genre. Jedi is okay, good nostalgia, very flawed. The prequels are all average at best due to poor writing and plotting, but they're visually interesting and often very exciting despite themselves.

Gonna copy and paste this for next time, this thread is one big repeating debate.

Imo the most annoying people in this fanbase are the one that claim that if you don't like all six films your not a TRUE Star Wars fan. Which makes about as much sense as saying that if you don't like Batman and Robin, you're not a real Batman Fan.

Agreed. Although I would put ROTS above Jedi. I think ROTS is an above average movie.

They're probably roughly tied, but I think Jedi has better writing and I am picky about poor writing.

Watch them chronologically:

4,5,6, skip the others.

Reminds me of The Simpsons episode Mr. Plow. Adam West shows a picture of him and robin to Bart. Bart asks: Who the Hell's Robin?

Default Star Wars scholar thinks you’ve got the prequels all wrong.

Mike Klimo, copywriter and Star Wars scholar, says Star Wars fans have got it all wrong.

And to prove it he has created a (Star Wars Ring Theory) that Lucas’ meticulous work on both trilogies is that of a genius.

The Ring Theory—based on Mary Douglas’s 2007 essay—implies at its core that the Star Wars saga is an elaborate ABC CBA rhyme pattern with Menace rhyming with Jedi, Attack with Empire, and Revenge with A New Hope. This is quite similar to theologists who attempt to explain away the Bible utilizing mathematics, and George Lucas has stated before that Star Wars is similar to poetry in that “every stanza kind of rhymes with the last one.”

Note: It's quite a long read so you'll be here awhile.

Man I love the prequels but when you have to go into that much detail and reach that far to explain/defend them, it's kinda missing the point. You either enjoy the movies or you don't. I defend them when I can but I learned long ago that it's a moot point trying to convince people who hate them to suddenly appreciate them. This "ring theory" thing is interesting but ultimately pointless, people just like what they like.

Pffft. Star Wars is the greatest in the original trilogy, followed by Empire. Jedi is far behind both but still pretty good (everything not on Endor at least) and the prequels aren't even in the same universe as any of them - they're genuinely bad movies.

I'm gonna copy and paste this to respond to your copy and paste every time.

Jedi is on par with AOTC as the worst Star Wars film ever made.

An objective fan's ranking:

The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars
The Phantom Menace
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
Attack of the Clones

My list is immune to begrudging fan.
