I've always been thankful that the special editions were released in 1997. Otherwise, I may have never got to see the original trilogy theatrically. I mean people were cheering and applauding when Luke blows the death star as if it was a brand new film.

With the Star Wars films, it should all be there, unless they were missing some of the negative. I'm no expert on how this stuff works, not by a longshot, and someone could correct me if I'm wrong but there shouldn't actually be too many obstacles in restoring a 4K version of the UOT for them.
If I remember correctly the biggest hurdles are the facts that many frames were lost when Lucas made the cuts/additions for the special editions. I'm not sure how extensive the damage is, but I do remember reading that a few years ago and that A New Hope was the most affected.

It's fantastic, puts the existing blu-rays to shame. To think it's from release prints, not the negative or a interpositive, and it looks this good. Sure there's some colour issues in some parts because of the state of the source, but I bet they'll be fixed by someone at some point. Can't wait for 4K83 and eventually 4K80.

On a separate note am I the only one who was upset at the removal of the Wolfman from the cantina? He was not even restored in semi specialized editions

So far more authentic a presentation. There off course is a 4k version non DNR, and a 1080p version that look absolutely amazing and really do replicate the experience of seeing the movie in a theatre in 1977. The only thing that is missing are the sticky floors and popcorn all over the place. and now the same team, TN-1 have turned their attention to 4K83, Return of the Jedi in 4K!
If they’re working on a 4K83 of ROTJ, does that mean that a 4K80 for Empire exists? I’ve only heard of the 4K77 Star Wars.

I might be wrong, but what I gathered was that the guy who did 4k77 (wich was finished may this year) has now moved on to do 4K83. There was another guy already working on Empire (4k80), but he stopped communicating, now another guy started working on Empire, so maybe with a little luck they complete together with 4k83.

btw they are also working on a restoration of the SW christmas special.

I’m so sad I was never able to see Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi back then.

To this date they’re the only Star Wars movies I haven’t seen on the big screen. I honestly can’t believe Disney never put these in theaters at all. I’d go lots of times! haha

Serious question. Aren't there some interim changes between theatrical and special that are welcome, though, that you feel just kind of belong in the OT? Like "the tractor beam is coupled..." line or the addition of the subtitle to the original?

I like the wampa a lot. He'd fit in the OT since he's practical. Overall though I just want the two options, OT and revised, similar to the Blade Runner BD/UHD releases.

For me it’s less a matter of how effective the changes are and more that they’re changes period. I just want to watch the movies as they were originally created and that showcase the original artists’ work. I’m sure there are lots of movies that could have improvements by cleaning up little things, but I’d rather have the option of seeing the original version. Of course this gets us into matte lines and wires, etc. which are kind of a different subject.

You’re right. According to IMDb a sound effect was added for the 1997 special edition. It also says that Lucas paid homage to the head bump by having Jango Fett bump his head in Attack of the Clones.

I just read part of an interview where the guy playing the stormtrooper said it didn’t hurt. He also said he distracted due to having an upset stomach.

I could live with a remastered version of Star Wars where they apply some minor changes like they did with the final cut of Blade Runner. For example:

- fix/erase all the matte lines
- add the lightsaber effect after Vader killed Ben
- fix the jump cut when Luke ignites his lughtsaber for the first time
- consistent lightsaber effects/colors
- extended corridor in the detention block scene
- fix the crowd in the throne room scene at the end
- minor goof corrections

I'd be perfectly fine with that.

Eh, I'm just gonna go with the original theatrical versions, errors and all. Compromising on one thing and not another just seems a bit hypocritical to me.

The tractor beam line is from the original mono mix, so I'm not even sure if it counts as an interim change.

I do find it rather odd that the mono mix has never been released on home video, despite supposedly being the definitive sound mix.

I think Harmy's biggest contribution is popularizing fan restorations of the films; there are other, better ones out there, but he helped to kickstart a movement, so he definitely deserves the credit for that.

But was it a case of the creator not wanting people to see the silent version, rather than some other, more pragmatic reason? Like how the colour version of A Trip to the Moon was considered lost for a really long time, or how the original cut of Tod Browning's Freaks is still lost?
