Not alive, no, but he's confirmed to appear in the movie so you can bet he'll be doing something of significance.

Like what? What Force Ghost, Pre-TLJ has done anything of significance other than talk? Then again, Force Ghosts apparently now can conjure lightning... :/

For the 5000th time: doing it in the WIDE SHOTS isn't the problem, it's the close-ups where there are only a few soldiers at a time where the CG armour looks so needlessly shitty. They could EASILY have shot Tem Morrison in real armour then redressed it, shot him again as another clone, redressed it, shot him again etc etc and composited them together in the computer. Instead it cost FAR more money to do all-CG armour and for a FAR worse effect. That scene in the hangar with Obi-Wan and the clones in Ep III is sooooo bad.

I remember an interview Lucas gave a long time ago (with Leonard Maltin?) where he said the most important thing in a movie is the story and technology is just a tool to tell that story. It seems with the prequels his philosophy was almost the complete opposite.

Yep. In Lucas' mind the old photochemical technology was always a barrier to his storytelling, but as it turned out it actually forced him to be more creative in a story sense and not just rely on frame-****ing the image with constant CG distractions. Sith isn't perfect (as noted ) but it finally feels like Lucas is more at ease with the digital technology, it's just a shame it took two entire movies to act as the shakedown cruise for all of his digital toys. (Yes, I know some of it was pioneered on Young Indy and then the Star Wars Special Editions but none of them had 2000 digital VFX shots or were shot on brand new HD cameras, you know?)

Been reading the Rinzler 'Making of' books again on the OT, and the constant reminder you get - especially in regards to the first film - is how restrictions on filmmakers can actually result in much better films. Being forced to re-think script, pacing, scene necessity, etc due to budgetary/technology issues is what gave us such an incredible film in the first place.

Another good example of this is the first Ghostbusters film.

Well, yes, however, there weren't 5 movies afterwards. The second movie was decent, but there hasn't been another Ghostbusters movie since until the remake/reboot. We'll see how Ghostbusters 3 comes along.

I think that if the technology today was around during a New Hope, it would be a completely different movie. Lucas always had that vision before the process, so my guess is Han wouldn't shoot first.

What's so weird about this case is how much more controlled and effective the first section is. I threw it on last night and it really opens beautifully.

How exactly do you suggest that technology limited who shot first?

The same reasoning that kept James Earl Jones from being able to yell out "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" when doing the voice work for Return Of The Jedi.

It was in From Star Wars to Jedi. The snippet with that quote is in this trailer (3:30).

Kinda a different scenario but reminds of how due to technical limitations Spielberg had to shoot Jaws as a more a suspense film than straight ahead thriller which many feel resulted in a better film than what was initially conceived.

Technical limitations are good for artistry. Limitations breed creativity. That's why CGI's ability to let the filmmaker do ANYTHING they want has hurt as much as it's helped in many cases (hello Peter Jackson).

The two stories I've always heard about Jaws are:
1. The shark looked awful in tests so they had to avoid showing it too much.
2. Spielberg refused to sign on to do the film unless they didn't show the shark until the final act.

They can't both be true, but I hear them both roughly equally.

That and the first changeable scene was when Greedo shot, Han awkward moved his head, and shot Greedo back. the whole "Han shot first" died after the Special Edition series.

But if Lucas had wanted it that way the whole time, nothing would need to be changed. They could've just shot it that way.

He wanted to wait because he prefers the CGI head move over a natural head move. It fits the story better. Another reason he waited is because he wasn’t sure how much time he wanted there to be between Greedo’s and Han’s shots. He wanted to be able to experiment with that and see what the public reaction would be, which is why every updated release of the special editions has a different length of time between the two shots.

The technology didn’t exist back then to have Greedo shoot. That’s why Lucas waited all those years.

The technology didn't even exist to have Greedo match Greedo.
