Aspects of Rey are annoying, but she's just one of a half dozen terrible characters in the new Star Wars and she's not the worst

From Po Dameron's "comedy" to Laura Dern's "battle strategy" to Maz Kanata being shoe-horned into the movie to stupid-pointless-casino planet, almost everything about TLJ blows, Rey is actually in the top half of things that aren't that bad about that movie.

AGAIN, what is UP with the vitriolic hate towards Rose??!! I don't get it!!!

There's nothing inherently bad about her that could warrant such negative feelings from people like you! She's optimistic! She's cheerful! She cares about people! What is there to hate??

She just doesn't fit into the Star Wars universe in any meaningful way. The same with way the Poe's humor is all wrong. Is she a bad character in general? No. Is she a bad character for Star Wars? Absolutely.

I think you've read a little to much into my comment. She sucks for this movie, but I don't have "vitriolic hate" for anyone in any movie ever.

Oddly, enough, I would love to have gotten some backstory on her sister. That beginning segment of the film was pretty awesome.

The scene was partially there to communicate to the audience that it's okay to laugh with the movie amidst all of the drama, with this being a middle chapter.

It's not all that different in tone from Han's "we're fine now" bit from ANH.

And not for nothing, that space hippy did volunteer to sneak onto the enemy flagship and disable their tracking system long enough for the rest of the resistance to escape.

Canto Bight also presented us with a very important context for the entire plot; that while there are those who suffer under the First Order, there are also many who profit and benefit from it. This harks back to the time of the Empire when again - many, many people were distraught at its falling. We've never seen this vital grey area on the screens with a Star Wars film before. It makes the universe that more realistic and relatable to reality.

Why is this so hard to understand?

I don’t need for a writer/director to tell me it’s fine to laugh during a movie. If something is genuinely funny I’ll laugh. If it feels more like the director is sending me a message that it’s okay to laugh, I probably won’t. The “We’re fine now” bit from Star Wars felt natural and it was over in like two seconds. I’m not sure how long the Poe bit was, but it felt like it was ten minutes. The longer the joke, the less funny it is.
