It's kind of hypocritical and ironic to complain about the length, because there are also plenty of feature-length videos about why the movie is bad.

The “Rey as a Mary Sue” criticism is an intellectually lazy attribution and possibly even reductionist given the fluid and variable nature of narrative structure, but posting videos in lieu of ones own argument is equally indefensible. Citing authority or giving credit to someone else’s idea should be encouraged but in a manner consistent with constructive debate.

I believe there are bigger problems than Rey’s exposition, pacing during the resistance meeting over starkiller base as an example.

I agree. It feels a little bit like NCIS with the gang all pitching in. Still a minor fault IMO , but it could have been done better.

Seems like that is more what the people saying she isn't a Mary sue are doing making long ass videos to bend events to try and make her not look like a Mary sue. And read fail on the "shut down" comment. I never said that I was shutting down what he said, I was simply responding to jayman3's statement that Prinze's comments shut down all fans. Nor was I trying to display a better understanding of the Force or Star Wars in general, simply that of his depiction of Luke and his journey in the OT.

Interesting how all the detractors of the posted comment limited their dissent to the "3 years" portion, yet did not attempt to debunk the amount of training that Luke went through in ESB nor that he had no "great understanding" of other languages. Why's that? Because it would be futile.

At the end of the day, the accurate, original description of Prinze's diatribe was on point: it was a rant. That's it. Bombastic and empassioned, but definitely no precision lightsabering about it. Maybe if he had been more concerned with dropping facts than F-bombs his statement would have been more credible.

It is really sad how this thread has devolved into personal attacks due to the differing of opinions. It's no wonder why many of us who were part of this thread when it originated have either stopped following it or choose to remain silent.

But it's not like my statement is going to stop any of you, so... carry on.

I simply called out your original response for being lazy, which it was. I don’t feel guilt about that, especially when you only chimed in to attempt to discredit someone who was defending the new films.

Perhaps it was a bit much to mock your phrasing, but as for it being insulting, it’s a far cry from something like this:

I watched some of the video and he bends it as much as the videos that call Rey a Mary Sue. I mean really bending is all about perspective you don't think hes bending because you agree with him but you think others are bending definitions because you don't agree with them its a personal bias that makes you think one sides bending things while the others not.

One of the sections in the TV Tropes entry for "Common Mary Sue Traits" says:

She will also have unusual eyes. No Mary Sue has brown eyes, regardless of her race. Often, it's a color not found in nature, like violet or gold. She might have Mismatched Eyes to get more unusual colors in. And if she has inconsistently colored eyes, that's almost an instant Mary Sue indicator. Whatever color her eyes are, expect the author to use Purple Prose to describe them ("jade green", "cerulean", "slate grey") and for these terms to be repeated often.

I don't know what all this talk has to do with the Complete Saga blu-ray set, but I do know this: no one knew what a "Mary sue" was until this thread. Myself included. Someone makes something up and a whole forum runs with it.
