now that I have gone blu ray im wondering what I have in my dvd collection that is worth upgrading to blu ray?
I do check the dvd comparisons on dvd beaver but other than that it seems like a lot of reviews dont really discuss whether a particular blu ray is much better than its dvd counterpart my oppo does a heck of a job upconverting by the way |

I double dip if:
1) it's one of my favorites...... In this case, I'll double dip even given only a marginal improvement in one aspect or another...... basically no matter what! 2) I enjoy the movie enough to give it multiple viewings (beyond what I've already given it) and it has significant audio and/or video improvements. 3) My DVD wasn't in O.A.R. 4) I like the movie, but may only watch it a couple more times in my life, but it's one of the $10 or less deals at Amazon........ then I'll probably snag it if I have my other priorities out of the way (other releases) I'm sure there are other reasons/criteria, but that's mostly it. |

I haven't really double-dipped as my DVD collection is rather miniscule, but I'd like to for movies like Braveheart, Gladiator and a few others. Like mentioned earlier though, I won't pay a premium price for them. As such, I still haven't upgraded those DVD's.

This is pretty much it, right here. Since my collection will be almost exclusively must-owns for me, that's it.

I double dip a lot if it's a movie I really love or if it's in a box set but I also double dip if they did a good job on the special features

I've been struggling with this recently. Over half of my BD's to date are double-dips, mainly for the PQ/AQ upgrade. I'm noticing it's not really worth it for the majority of the films I already own. Does it make sense to upgrade a Juno or OfficeSpace? I already have, but don't think I would again. Now if Singles or Badlands get's the Blu treatment, I'd upgrade anyways as those are some of my favorite films, so I guess it really ultimately comes down to how much I like the movie. Of course, there's also the fact that I have over 100 dvd's that I've never watched, hard to justify a double dip when I never took the time to watch the original copy!

Great thread. It's something that I've struggled with since I started exclusively buying blu-rays last November. I've had a PS3 for longer than that, but just recently bought a HDTV. Here are my rules that thus far (45 Blu's & 4 months) I've been able to adhere to. In order for me to double-dip it has to meet these criteria:
1. It's one of my top 25 favorite movies 2. It's an improvement over the DVD in terms of PQ/AQ 3. It's $14.99 or less. (Preferably $9.99-$11.99) 4. I'll watch more than once. (Preferably once a year). I haven't double dipped to many times to date. So far these are the movies I've 'upgraded' 1. The Thing ($9.99) 2. Big Trouble in Little China ($9.99) 3. King Kong ($14.99) 4. Point Break ($5 - Target coupon) 5. Predator ($8) 6. Ronin ($9.99) 7. Stargate ($5) 8. Terminator ($8) 9. The Wild Bunch ($5) Most of these I got over black friday I should point out that I have not gotten rid of my DVDs, because sometimes it's easier to loan out DVDs. I figure I can always take them to our family's cottage and leave them up there to watch. |

I double dip if I really like the movie AND they did a good job with the blu-release and it included lossless audio.
There are also some movies I'm waiting for (Armageddon and The Abyss) where the DVD didn't even have an anamorphic release. |

same as when I don't double dip.
If it is a movie I would like to see then I buy it. If I had it on DVD or not, does not matter. |

I generally only buy things once.
But with my DVD collection being pretty big for the average consumer, if something hits the $9.99 price range I'll consider double dipping if it's an action/sci-fi movie. Or if it's really good. I won't spend more than $9.99 on a double dip though. Hell, most of my BD collection I have spent an average of $12.99 on via previously viewed {when BD is THIS young it's like practically buying a new movie only cheaper} or via brand new movies going on sale. Same here. I'm selling all by DVDs on eBay save for the few I don't think will ever be released on BD.
