I'm confused about something. Sony has made several ps3 models. The first two at launch had ps1 and ps2 chips inside which gave the machine hardware support for ps1 and ps2 games. Starting with the 80 GB model, Sony went for software emulation, which would mean supporting ps1 and ps2 games without hardware. The latest model, the 40 GB has no support at all for ps2 games, although there has been some talk of adding in an emulator. Is software emulation and emulators the same thing?

The point is that if you took the 40 and added an emulator for ps2 games, wouldn't that be the same thing as geting the 80 that already has an emulator for ps2 games?

Does the 80 support ps2 games through software emulation completely?

I'm guessing that the 80GB actually had a piece of hardware that enables the software emulation that they removed in the 40GB. I mean, if it's just software, why remove it? Quote:

With the 40, the idea is to not have any support for ps2 games, yet some sony fans would complain about that even though the 40 would sell for less money. Why add take out support for ps1 games completely? although I think that I may have asked that on here before. If you want support for all three categories of games, you should pay more, if you don't then you should pay less, that sound's fair to me.

All PS3 units play PS1 games (perhaps except made for a couple of obscure games, but I don't think anyone even cares).
The 20GB and 60GB units in North America and Japan all feature nearly complete BC, as they contain both PS2 graphics chip and its processor. The 60GB EU model and the 80GB unit currently on the market feature partial BC. They have have the graphics chip, but have dispensed with the PS2 processor. The 40GB unit in all territories have no PS2 BC. The new 80GB unit is the same as the 40GB unit (no PS2 BC), and will be replacing both the existing 80GB and the existing 40GB units. And I second the notion that Sony will likely have BC of some sort worked out in firmware by the holidays. |

I forgot about the recent 80GB announcement to switch out the 40GB HDD for a 80GB one. So, that's what he meant by NEW 80GB. I was thinking he meant the ones currently out. Yep, no PS2 hardware in that one, when it comes out.
