Default What's a good Blu-Ray player?

I'm looking for a really good Blu-Ray player.

Any suggestions? And I'm Canadian. And NO PS3.

I'd go with either the Sony BDP-S550 or the Panasonic DMP-BD35K or DMP-BD55.

PS3 is the best though!

DMP-BD55 for the win. Great player, versatile. Make sure you do the firmware upgrade though...

Honestly, why the need to throw that in when the OP specifically mentioned "no PS3" ?

Just stating my opinion on the best blu-ray player, not offering it up as a choice. Hence it is separate from the choices. Why waste a post in pointing it out?

Because there is absolutely no need to add a comment like that. The OP asked what was a good player and "NO PS3" and you felt the "fanboi" need to add a petty remark.

I would recommend the Panasonics', either the BD35 or BD55. I remember reading this review someone posted, and liked what I read. As well, Futureshop has the DMP-BD35 on sale right now, with 3 free movies with purchase.

The only difference between the two models is that the BD35 will bitstream the HD audio to your receiver, and the BD55 can send it out via the analog outputs. But to know which would suit you better, it would help to know what equipment it's going to get connected to.

Default best blu ray player

Specifically not mentioning the PS 3, I just bought the BDP 35k mentioned in another reply at amazon for 237 shipped. I saw someone mentioned futureshop. When I looked it was like 330 or something close with 3 free flicks.

I originally purchased a Sony BDP-S300 because I did not want the PlayStation to stick out from the rest of my components. The S300 was too slow. I ultimately caved in and got the PS3. I hide it behind my 52-inch Sharp Aquos. No one can see it and I can slip a BD into the PS3 with ease. The remote is Bluetooth so there is no problem operating it despite being placed behind the screen.

The PS3 loads BDs lightning fast, it has built-in wireless internet that connects to my wireless router for easy firmware updates (etc.) and it has HDMI connectivity. I don't own a single game for the PS3 - it is used exclusively for BD playback.

Anyway, I was like you: I said "No PS3!" Today, having the PS3 for my BD playback is the best purchase I ever made (PLUS the remote for the PS3).

I love it (you would too).

I recently received my panny bd 35k and I have to say that it is quick to load movies, much faster then my bd10ak. the PQ is excellent, I ran through several test movies and was really impressed with the detail. I have yet to use it as an upconverter, but I would say that if you are considering a player with profile 2.0 and have a receiver with hdmi inputs, this should defintely be on the short list. setup is easy, I had it playing a bd in about 6 minutes from my wife handing me the box.

Just recently replaced my PS3 with a Sony BDP-S550. Better upconverting better sound (bitstream to my expensive receiver.), more connection options. The pros make the slightly slower load times not an issue. So my vote would be for the S550 but I have heard good things about the Pannys.

So have I, and that's why in a couple of days on Black Friday, I am picking up a Panny 35 when the prices are slashed.

Default Panasonic DMP-BD 35 or 55

Looking to get my first Blu-Ray player. With my system, is it worth the extra money to get the BD 55 over the BD 35? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System:
Samsung DLP 1080i TV
Onkyo TX-SR 705
Kef iQ9, iQ6c, iQ8ds
Velodyne DLS-400R

It really depends on whether or not you want to send audio out to your receiver via HDMI or analog. If you wanted analog, I'd say it's a worthy upgrade for your setup.

As for earlier posts, I currently own a PS3 and I want a BD55. The PS3 is faster now, but there are reasons already mentioned to get the standalone, instead. Not to mention, I'm not a gamer and I don't want a gaming system.

I see that I have the same Onkyo 705 as you do so am I safe to assume that it does support HD thru HDMI?
