How else can I explain what I said? It's about as simple as I you can get. As long as something (whether it be movie, tv show, anime, etc) was not recorded in 480i it has enough detail to benefit from a Blu-ray transfer.

Even if anime was only 480i I would still buy it on blu. Because hopefully with the amount of storage on a disc they woudn't continue to be asses and put 3 eps on a disc like they do with dbz dvds..
![]() Plus if they feel like being nice they could jam pack it with extras and a nice audio codec if that is possible. Last edited by Red Hood; 12-29-2008 at 09:56 PM. |

I will be forever mystified by the desire to put standard-def material onto BD for the purpose of packing as many episode onto a single disc...
However, seeing my Mom's Chinese TV soap operas spread out over numerous low-space VCDs are another story entirely. |

If you mean technically, Funimation's Dragonball Z movies look pretty spiffy--
If you mean in terms of selection, the Japanese just aren't getting it. Frankly, it'd be better having no anime on BD at all, rather than having our only selection be "Paprika", "Tekonkinkreet" and GITS2:Innocence. ![]() (And you thought OUR early-adopter catalog was bad last year!) ![]() Last edited by EricJ; 12-29-2008 at 11:40 PM. |

As it is, looks like we'll be beating down the mega-maniac Storage-Heads all the way into double-digit years. ![]() And if we were talking about even the most vestigial trace of a sense of humor, "random" would be a GOOD thing-- Welcome to the world of Japanese "art" features. ![]() (Where GITS2:Innocence is considered a somnambulistic punchline even in its own country...) "FREEDOM" is awesome on Blu-ray! Also, "Royal Space Force" (Wings of Honneamise) and "SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers: The Next" looks great too! Enjoyed the "Gattai! Gunbuster vs. Diebuster" box set as well. I'm about to start "Yukikaze"...
Haven't yet watched any FUNimation releases on Blu-ray though....ala Vexille or DBZ movies. |

Akira on HDtv looks way better than the DVD even upconverted. It depends on the anime series. If you think Slayers or Ranma 1/2 is going to look a lot better you might be disappointed. Even older series should look cleaner in HD though.. less pixel blots, etc. It might look more polished at the least.

Yeah, depends on the material, and (to me) it also depends on what it is available in other forms. So for example if the Patlabor series (plural) were released on Blu, I'd buy them even though they may not really benefit that much from the HD, but it'd have to be better than what is currently available.
I hear some of the made for TV CG animated stuff was rendered for 480, so when on 1080 is just upconverted. Kind of like why releasing say season 1 and 2 of Buffy on Blu would be a bit of a waste - the CG was all rendered for 60Hz 480i I believe. A lot of the cell based older anime (eg, Patlabor 1 and 2) look absolutely superb as you can see so much extra detail in the painted backgrounds. Stuff like the Simpsons, animation and backgrounds are all very monochromatic and low intrinsic detail, so I honestly would be surprised if you could pick the difference between a 1080p shot and an upconverted PAL image. I could be wrong though. |

Though the best kind of animation for Blu is CGI, like what Pixar do. CGI looks awesome in 1080p and no movie can beat it so far. I still have to see Japanese Anime in HD to forge an opinion.

Paprika is a great flick and the details and color 'pop' provided by blu is awesome. The sound quality is also better.
Worth picking up. I was surprised to see how much a 2D 'cartoon' could be improved on blu. This one made me a believer. |
