Default What happened to you people caring about OAR?

First the godfather and now the truman show! they're supposed to be 1.85:1 not 1.78:1! wtf! They've cut alittle bit of the sides off just so theres no black bars? This is just as bad if not worse than pan and scan, simply b/c i thought blu ray was supposed to be all about the directors vision? "The way it was meant to be seen"

Ok I've calmed down. This just seriously makes me mad. Can someone explain this to me? Is there really no difference?

Actually they've opened the mattes a little so that the picture is 16:9.

It's something that Paramount and Warner have been doing for years. Even their DVDs were like that. Only most people didn't notice with the overscan. Fox and Sony do real 1.85:1.

Anyway, it's a very small difference. I'm one of the worst nitpickers and I don't find it objectionable.

So, there still IS a difference? We still don't see the way it was shown in theatres?

Yes there is a 3.6 percent difference.

Okay, so there is alittle more on the top and bottom? That doesn't sound too bad. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm probably the most uneducated on aspect ratios and home set ups out of everyone on this board.

1.85:1 to 1.78:1 isn't that bad. On a normal tv, it gets blocked by overscan anyways, so it really does look like you are watching a 1.85:1 image. Just another thing to think about.

I obviously nitpick when it comes to thing like this. I just want to make sure we're not missing out on image. I want the whole thing to be there.

Exactly. Most "Academy Flat" movies are shot with "soft mattes" - ie the whole 4:3 negative (sorry, 1.37:1) is exposed and then the top and bottom are masked during projection. This makes it easier to obtain full-frame transfers for video.

I doubt you are missing anything. This is a miniscule amount.

So, if they're oppening the matte, doesn't this make it easier to spot goofs? I.E.: Shadows, boom mics.

Opening it to 4x3 - YES. 1.78 - I doubt it Like the previous poster I'm a real nitpicker with OAR and I don't mind it either. I'd prefer they didn't do it, but it doesn't particularly bother me.

IM a stickler about OAR as well, and Im scorning about cropping an 1.85:1 image to get 1.78:1 AR. But if they open the matte to 1.78, Im usually OK about that.

1.78:1 from 1.85:1 is not a big difference. Just as others have said, it opens up the image if anything, so you're not missing anything at all, you're getting more.

As for seeing goofs, if a movie is made well, you should see very little, if nothing at all.

I think The Truman Show was 1.85:1 in theatres, the first DVD release for The Truman Show was 1.66:1, both the Special Edition & Blu discs are 1.78:1. I still have the 1st DVD release and there is more image fo sho... Same goes for A Clockwork Orange, presented originally at 1.66:1 but is now 1.78:1 on the newest home video releases.

I'm willing to bet your TV has overscan which, technically, further distorts your ability to see true OAR. You should be more concerned about that instead of 1:78 vs. 1:85.

I am not sure what I am about to say is entirely true, if so I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. When a film is shown matted in the theater, it is up to the theater itself to adjust the matting for its screens. I have heard of some cases where objects that were not supposed to appear on screen (microphones, equiptment, etc.) have shown up due to improper matting by the theater. If this is the case, each theater might have a slightly different ratio to the film and you may be seeing more on the top or bottom or whatever depending on where you went to see the film.

True or not?

Clockwork Orange is 1.66:1 on the blu-ray release. What newest releases are you talking about.
