Okay, so there is alittle more on the top and bottom? That doesn't sound too bad. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm probably the most uneducated on aspect ratios and home set ups out of everyone on this board.

Exactly. Most "Academy Flat" movies are shot with "soft mattes" - ie the whole 4:3 negative (sorry, 1.37:1) is exposed and then the top and bottom are masked during projection. This makes it easier to obtain full-frame transfers for video.

I doubt you are missing anything. This is a miniscule amount.

So, if they're oppening the matte, doesn't this make it easier to spot goofs? I.E.: Shadows, boom mics.

Opening it to 4x3 - YES. 1.78 - I doubt it Like the previous poster I'm a real nitpicker with OAR and I don't mind it either. I'd prefer they didn't do it, but it doesn't particularly bother me.

IM a stickler about OAR as well, and Im scorning about cropping an 1.85:1 image to get 1.78:1 AR. But if they open the matte to 1.78, Im usually OK about that.

1.78:1 from 1.85:1 is not a big difference. Just as others have said, it opens up the image if anything, so you're not missing anything at all, you're getting more.

As for seeing goofs, if a movie is made well, you should see very little, if nothing at all.
